Africa Weekend. This year's the festival is curated by Yinka Shonibare, celebrated for works including Nelson's Ship in a Bottle, which he made for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square. Festival includes photography from Rotimi Fani-Kayode; a concert from Tony Allen and Niaja Centric Orchestra; and a club night with BBC Radio1Xtra's DJ Edu.

Deloitte Ignite returns for its fifth year with an Africa Weekend, curated by Yinka Shonibare, MBE.

The festival will open on 31 August 2012.

Festival includes photography from Rotimi Fani-Kayode; a concert from Tony Allen and Niaja Centric Orchestra; and a club night with BBC Radio1Xtra’s DJ Edu.

Deloitte Ignite returns for its fifth year with an Africa Weekend, curated by internationally renowned artist Yinka Shonibare, MBE. The award-winning three day, cultural festival delivered by business advisory firm Deloitte and the Royal Opera House will open on 31 August. The festival, which is open to the public for free, is renowned for delivering a diverse multi-arts programme from cutting edge artists.

Describing his vision for Deloitte Ignite, Yinka says:

“The Africa Weekend is a celebration of traditional African and avant-garde arts and culture. It is an expression of innovation and Africa's global contribution to culture. The weekend will comprise of cinema, visual arts, dance, music, food and a club night. My aim is to highlight the surprising aspects of the expressions of contemporary African artists. This is an inclusive weekend that will engage all of the senses from drumming, to dance workshops, to storytelling and food from different parts of the continent.”

The weekend will begin with an introductory talk featuring Yinka Shonibare MBE and cultural historian Gus Casely-Hayford. This is followed by a concert in the evening from Tony Allen and Niaja Centric Orchestra. Tickets for the concert cost £25 with £20 concessions.

There is free entry throughout Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September when visitors can experience a unique interactive exhibition of contemporary African musical instruments, entitled Instrumentos and curated by Angolan composer, performer and designer Victor Gama. Furthermore, examples of the work of photographer Rotimi Fani-Kayode will be displayed throughout the Royal Opera House. Families can participate in African Dance, Storytelling and Drumming workshops led by IRIE! Dance Theatre.

The festival will provide exciting evening entertainment as BBC Radio1Xtra’s DJ Edu hosts a club night on Saturday 1 September, bringing the sound of the African underground to the UK. Tickets cost £10. On Sunday, Mezzo soprano Josephine Amankwah will curate a classical concert featuring African Messiah by composer Tunde Jegede.
