comunicato stampa

The Department of State’s office of Art in Embassies (AIE) and Pump House Gallery are pleased to announce a lecture and presentation on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Pump House Gallery, featuring American artists Hays and Ryan Holladay. The lecture is free and open to the public. The artists will be working on a commission for the public realm of the U.S. Embassy in Nine Elms on the South Bank, London, scheduled to open in 2017.

Hays and Ryan Holladay have created many site-specific audio-visual installations and engineered interactive concerts. The Washington D.C and Los Angeles based brothers have worked together since childhood on music and sound-related projects from site-specific installations and interactive concerts to film scores and mobile apps. The pair often utilizes new and emerging technologies and has amassed a body of work for which WIRED magazine called them "pioneers."

For the lecture at the Pump House Gallery, the artists will discuss their artistic process, history of collaboration and their future projects, including their location-aware music projects like The National Mall and Central Park, which the Washington Post called “Magical...like using GPS to navigate a dream.” In 2014, the artists curated the exhibition Fermata: A Celebration of Sound, featuring nearly 30 sound artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alvin Lucier. Ryan Holladay is a 2013 TED Fellow and a 2014 Aspen Ideas Scholar.

Art in Embassies, a premier public-private partnership within the U.S. Department of State, furthers U.S. diplomacy efforts through the power of the visual arts by expansive, international cross-cultural exchange around the world. AIE was established by the Museum of Modern Art in 1953, and formalized as part of the Department of State by the Kennedy Administration in 1963.

Pump House Gallery sits on the western edge of Nine Elms on the South Bank, where Battersea Power Station and New Covent Garden Market are being transformed and where the new US and Dutch Embassies are locating.
