comunicato stampa

A written symbol can be regarded as meaningful and meaningless at the same time; in the manner in which quantum physics tells us that something can exist and non-exist simultaneously. This essential theory of quantum physics manifests in the works of the artist Espen Cook, as he explores the relationship between sign and meaning. Inspired by traditional Chinese paintings, Cook’s practice relates to both Eastern traditional techniques and materials, and to Western contemporary culture. Cook will give a presentation about his body of work, and the genesis of the Unknown Quantum Connection. This will be followed with a moderated discussion by Adrian Wong with the artist, and Billy Lo, an ardent art aficionado and Cook’s first benefactor.

Espen Cook is a Norwegian-born visual artist who lives and works in Hong Kong. From 2010-2012 he attended the Bergen School of Arts (KIB). His work is influenced by jazz and contemporary experimental music as well as Scandinavian design and architecture. Impressions from the gritty streets and textures of the back alleys of Hong Kong can be traced in the texture and style of his paintings. His mode of work is akin to that of a scientist; the material being collected, processed and finally presented, each step as important as the next.

Billy Lo is General Manager of Cushman & Wakefield’s Beijing office. In this role, Billy focuses on managing C&W’s business in Beijing and drives strategic initiatives to expand business development and transaction opportunities across the market. Billy has over 30 years of experience in the property sector with a proven track record and strong leadership and management skills. Billy is a music and culture enthusiast, and engages in planning of a great number of arts and cultural real estate projects in China. As an art collector, Billy has a unique perspective on art.

Adrian Wong (Moderator) received his Master’s degree in research psychology from Stanford University in 2003, followed by an MFA in 2005 from Yale University. Relying heavily on a research based method, his installations, videos, and sculptures draw from varied subjects and explore the intricacies of his relationship to his environment. Based in Hong Kong since 2005, Wong is the co-founder and director of Embassy Projects, an arts consultancy and independent production studio. His recent exhibitions include the traveling exhibition “Troglodyte See the Light,” “A Passion for Creation” for the Louis Vuitton Fondation pour la Création, and “Hong Kong Eye” at the Saatchi Gallery. His work is included in the Uli Sigg Collection (Lucerne), the DSL Collection (Paris), Hong Kong Museum of Art (Hong Kong), M+ Museum Collection (Hong Kong), and a few notable private collections.
