Double Feature

SFMoMA, San Francisco

Bringing together new installations by media artists Nick Crowe and Gary Hill, Double Feature offers an intriguing look at how technology is touching the most intimate realms of human experience. Intense and transformative, both works - Hill's dark, disorienting "Remembering Paralinguay" (with Paulina Wallenberg-Olsson), which explores the tension between physical presence and representation, and Crowe's austere, luminous "The New Medium", a virtual memorial to the dead - reveal artists using new media to question cultural orthodoxies.

New Works by Nick Crowe and Gary Hill.

Double Feature, an exhibition format recently initiated by SFMOMA's Department of Media Arts, aims to create a dialogue between two artist's projects, which simply by nature of being next to each other reveal affinities and provoke unexpected associations. In different ways, both installations in this inaugural Double Feature examine our relationship to an increasingly abstract and fluctuating social structure. Nick Crowe's white environment, for example, seems to suggest a dematerialized and unearthly context, while Gary Hill's disorienting dark space evokes an environment of anguish and chaos.

Evolving geographies, the collapse of the real and the virtual into an amorphous flow of information, call for a collective desire to establish new landmarks that help give a sense of direction. These works offer a reflective environment in which to engage these primal issues.
