Silence silence silence

Mladinsko Theatre, Ljubljana

comunicato stampa

Following the succesfull presentatin at 20 international festivals in Europe, Mexico, Brasil, Columbia Vito Taufer's magic performance Silence silence silence will travel to France in the beginning of March 2000. On 9th of March 2000 we will be presented for the first time in France at Comedie de Saint-Etienne as a part of international season of this theatre directed by Daniel Benoit.

It would be a great pleasure for us to welcome you together with our friends from Saint-Etienne for the representation at Comedie.

-------------------

SILENCE was conceived in March 1996 and has been widely presented at Festivals in Europe and Latin America (Exodos - Ljubljana, Slovenia; Eurokaz - Zagreb, Croatia; MOT - Skoplje, Macedonia; BITEF - Belgrade, Yugoslavia; FIAC - Sao Paulo, Brazil; Spectrum - Villach, Austria; A PART - Katowice, Poland; UFGM - Ouro Preto & Belo Horizonte, Brazil; MES - Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Theater an der Ruhr - Mülheim, Germany; Mûscarnok Festival - Budapest, Hungary; Festival Iberoamericano de teatro - Bogota, Colombia, Mittelfest, Cividale, Italy, Festival Madrid Sur, Madrid, Spain...) and received Grand Prix for the best Slovene theater performance in 1996 and a Special Award at BITEF Festival), Gastspiel aus Europa, Hannover, Germany, Spring Festival, Tessaloniki, Greece, FIAC, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, Aarhus Festuge, Denmark....

The critics described it as Staging of the breath (Bla* Lukan), Sonata for a Silence that dose not exist (®enja Leiler), The Power of Scenographic Poetry (Marija Grgièeviæ), The Challenge of Gesture (Dubravka Vrgoæ), Silence bears within itself The Rage of the Universe (Mariangela Alves de Lima), Perfection of Theatrical Performance (Lilijana Mazova).

The performance is constructed as a dramaturgical journey of five sequences through a mixed space-time cosmology, which by means of highly aestetical, lyrical and atmospheric stenography gradually slides through the depth of the stage space to the "final" (but at the end demolished) wall.

(Delo, Ljubljana)

Taufer allows no rest in the dark scenes which weight on the shadowy colors of the subjects. The figures alight on obstacles in their movements, they drag behind them or lift heavy objects, their space is restricted by walls. The contracting of the actor's muscles seems physical suffering and is transmitted to the audience. Only a complete and final victory over the space brings us relief. The gradual flight from the cells within this closed universe signifies victory.

(O Estado de Sao Paulo, Brazil)

Silence Silence Silence goes far beyond physical expression, it is a proper dance performance of immense plastic complexity, with a strong inner dramaturgy. In five scenes in which muscular tension has to act both as form and meaning, the director Vito Taufer achieved an unusual balance and a moving plastic clarity. The Slovenian Mladinsko Theatre boasts with a remarkable technical level as well - experimenting with fantastic elements of black theater elevated into surrealism and fused with the brutality and experimental heritage introduced from the East in the late eighties (Kantor, Grotowski). An expressive performance, deeply marked with neoexpressionist dance, centered towards total art, serious and deep.

(Roger Salas, El país, Nov 3rd 1998, Madrid, Spain)
