The 1999 German Open

Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wolfsburg

comunicato stampa

The German Open Putting Germany in the spotlight, the Wolfsburg Kunstmuseum presents the millenial mega-show of young German artists. "The 1999 German Open" is the result of detailed research and consultation, where over 100 studios in the Federal Republic were visited, resulting in a hand-picked selection of thirty-seven of the hottest artists to emerge from the Deutchland.
Possessing an uninhibited spontaneity that captures the mind and feeling of a whole generation, many of the works in the exhibition directly reflect the concrete experiences of everyday life: leisure culture with its highly developed music scene; on-line communication and the Internet; the co-existence of differieng cultural and social scenarios; film, television, and advertising, with all their diverse forms of visual imagery. "The German Open" sets out to illustrate the multidimensional quality of present-day art by setting out the sheer diversity of aristic interests involved.
The exhibition features: Franz Ackermann, Kai Althoff, John Bock, Simone Böhm, Cosima von Bonin, Marc Brandenburg, Matti Braun, Sunah Choi, Peter Dittmer, Olafur Eliasson, Stefan Exler, Christian Flamm, Peter Friedl, Alexander Györfi, Elmar Hess, Stefan Hoderlein, Christian Hoischen, Christan Jankowski, Stefan Kern, Andree Korpys, Markus Löffler, Michel Majerus, Maix Mayer, Jonathan Meese, Max Mohr, Manfred Pernice, Daniel Pflumm, Peter Pommerer, Neo Rauch, Tobias Rehberger, Reinigungsgesellschaft (Martin Keil & Hendrik Mayer), Daniel Richter, Gregor Schneider, Tilo Schulz, Heidi Specker, Silke Wagner, Johannes Wohnseifer, and Joseph Zehrer.
"The German Open 1999" approaches present-day artistic creativity in Germany through a multiplicity of individual displays, reflecting the image of a lively, undogmatic, and vital art scene in which elements of design, architecture, science, advertising, theatre, and music combine. Far from being subsumed into any kind of fashionable trend, each individual artistic personality is seen in all its uniqueness.
The accompanying catalogue (320pp., 400 colour illustrations) is published in German and English with a preface by Gijs van Tuyl, texts by Andrea Brodbeck and Veit Görner, and representative texts on the artists.
