Playing amongst the ruins

Royal College of Art Galleries, London

The exhibition brings together the work of twelve artists, investigating an expanded idea of architectural space in ways which are sometimes playful, sometimes subversive.

Vito Acconci, John Bock, Gelatin, Sam Durant, Peter Halley, Anton Henning, Matthias Müller, Luisa Lambri, Sarah Morris, Martha Rosler, Silke Schatz, Mark Titchner.

The exhibition includes work from the early 80s, recent work and new commissions. It will include the first showing in Europe of Collision House, one of Vito Acconci’s mobile architectures from 1981. New commissions include a project by Austrian group gelatin and a wall painting by Mark Titchner.

Many of the works refer to architectural forms, engaging with shifting relationships between the body and architecture, between the city and the psyche. Prevalent throughout the exhibition is a concern with how cities and buildings affect us.

Cities are animated with new meanings. Urban structures are revisited through personal narratives. Childhood wallpapers are reconfigured. Architectural proposals are constructed from fabric and wire. Replicas of structures are burned and vandalised. Bodies are manipulated. Buildings are assembled.

From the ruins of existing structures, games of reconfiguration emerge, defying resolution or closure. The search for completion is abandoned and the play begins.
