Works by 86 contemporary artists

Curator: Annika Gunnarsson. Chief Curator: Simon Njami

Africa Remix is an exhibition of contemporary art from Africa. It comprises around a hundred works by 86 artists, and is being shown on two floors of Moderna Museet. The artists come from 25 African countries and several of them also live and work in Europe or the USA. The role of African artists on the international art scene is a contemporary one. The artists represent their own artist work - not their countries.

The exhibition is split into three theme areas - Identity and History - City and Land - Body and Soul. Concepts such as representativity and individuality are highlighted, as are power and urbanisation. The African nations’ relations with and attitude to the west is shown from their own perspective, but above all the works express the uniqueness of each individual oeuvre. Africa Remix demonstrates the diversity of art and culture that abounds in Africa today.

The works have been chosen by Chief Curator Simon Njami, in collaboration with museum kunst palast, Dusseldorf, the Hayward Gallery, London, the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, where the exhibition has been previously shown.

Moderna Museet especially wishes to thank KLM Air France, Sheraton Stockholm and the French Embassy, and also Selam, CinemAfrica and Afro Art for their cooperation.

A richly illustrated catalogue including essays by Simon Njami and David Elliott (director of Moderna Museet in 1997-2001) accompanies the exhibition.
