Solo show

In her first major solo presentation in a London public space, Pump House Gallery has commissioned Helen Maurer to make new site-specific works that explore created landscapes. Maurer’s unique installations employ arrangements of inconspicuous small transparent objects, which are converted by an overhead projector into wall-sized fleeting images.

Whilst earlier works involved bespoke glass objects made by the artist, in her current practice Maurer films the effects created during the works’ construction and projects these as digital animations. Mirrors reflect fragments of a piece into other areas of the space or across carefully selected furniture/objects, sometimes contorting or reconfiguring them in the process. Responding to the unique architecture and context of the Pump House Gallery, she returns to themes of water and light, reflective not only in quality but in atmosphere. In new works, found objects function as symbols forming connections to historic landscape painting and remembered places, many from the English south coast. She now lives on a boat, which also informs the content and visual qualities within her current practice.

Maurer was born in Portsmouth and studied Visual and Performing Arts at Brighton University before completing an MA in Glass at The Royal College of Art. The artist has worked on several public commissions, most recently creating a site-specific installation for the Arts Council Offices, London. She won the 2003 Jerwood Prize for Glass and lives and works in London.

The exhibition has been devised in association with Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham and shows there from September 16th to October 28th 2006. Helen Maurer is represented by Danielle Arnaud contemporary art, London. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

Exhibition supported by Arts Council England. Private View sponsored by Reyka Vodka.
