Associations have long existed between image and text in interpretative and illustrative relationships. The hand of the artist, the impression left by a tool or brush, notions of originality and authorship are prevalent for some artists, whilst others seem less occupied with conceptual issues and more concerned with the physical language of text. Between the Lines presents an array of approaches to the use of text.

Myra Stimson, Adele Jackson and Jonathan Callan consider the shape and space surrounding text and symbols in the surface levels of their work. Stimpson paints a mesh of the outlines and shapes between words. She uses the hand written notes of unknown authors to create intricately painted and drawn portraits. Jackson uses Braille in her work. She selects and enlarges fragments of Braille and etches subtle discs into glass panels. Her works are to be touched, read and visually regarded. Callan perforates the printed text on pages, books and maps projecting worms of silicon through the letters. His work appears in various states of biological growth and decay.

Katy Culbard, Edwin Morris and Lizzie Hill work on the premise that writing is drawing and vice versa. Culbard's work centres on the meaning of words, and the process of handwriting. She uses pen, ink and paper to visualise her interest in philology. Morris writes and draws directly onto the gallery walls. His phrases invite the viewer to consider the directness and obscurity of his statements. Hill hand-stitches written drawings into old white handkerchiefs. Her contemporary and subversive samplers are clean, pressed and darned to preserve the framework of delicate text and line.

John Tozer, Simone Lia and Tom Gauld are inspired by existing formats in publications. John Tozer writes about art and art theory. He writes his own versions of infamous texts, revealing elements of art and text with obscure humour. His enlarged xerox copies mimic the spread of a book with text and image. Lia and Gauld work together to produce comic strip style prints and publications. They consider the relationships of format and layout through the subject matter of everyday experiences.
