Circa trenta donne sudanesi sono stese a terra sopra una tela bianca. Sono posate a faccia in giu', come corpi morti, ammassate una sull'altra. I loro occhi sono chiusi e i loro corpi immobili. Non c'e' dialogo o suono.

Il colore della pelle delle donne e' scurito da trucco nero. Una larga pennellata orizzontale di pittura rossa percorre la tela e i corpi delle donne, evocando una performance pittorica dell'Azionismo Viennese (1960-1971). La pennellata percorre la
tela e schizza al suolo.

Questa performance avrà luogo alla Pescheria di Rialto, il mercato del pesce sul Canal Grande, ampio spazio pubblico, durante i giorni della vernice della Biennale di Venezia. L'evento mima le dimostrazioni degli anni '70 di operai e studenti
contro il governo e i capitalisti.

La tela agisce sia come palcoscenico della performance sia come pittura. Parla un linguaggio che il pubblico della Biennale puo' comprendere. Diventa rappresentazione grafica dei violenti massacri in corso in Africa, in particolare il genocidio in
atto nella regione del Darfur, in Sudan.

L'immagine cruda della performance presenta dal vivo cio' che e' mostrato quotidianamente dalla tv ad un pubblico desensibilizzato. Enfatizza la necessità di capire la realtà, oltre lo spettacolo televisivo, e di comprendere il ruolo che
l'occidente gioca in esso al di là del sensazionalismo della morte e della confusione della guerra.

Biografia

Vanessa Beecroft was born in Genoa in 1969 and currently resides in Los Angeles.
Her work has shown internationally since 1993, and often presents provocative social commentary and critique. Beecroft is noted for her innovative performances and unconventional approach to the creation of images and communication.

VB61 Still death! Darfur still deaf?

Approximately thirty Sudanese women lie atop a white canvas on the ground. They lie, faces down, like dead bodies, piled one on top of the other. Their eyes are shut and their bodies are motionless. There is no talking and no sound.

The women's skin color is darkened by black makeup. A wide, red paint stroke horizontally crosses the canvas and the women's bodies, invoking a Viennese Actionism-performance painting (1960-1971). The stroke slashes the canvas and spills onto the ground.

This performance will take place at the Pescheria di Rialto-the fish market on Canal Grande, an open public space-during the days of the Venice Biennale. The event imitates the 1970s working-class and student demonstrations against the Government and Capitalists.

The canvas acts as both a stage for the performance and a painting. It speaks in a language that those attending the Venice Biennale will understand. It serves as a graphic representation of the ongoing violent massacres in Africa, particularly the genocide happening in the Darfur region of Sudan.

The performance's graphic image creates live what is shown daily on TV to a desensitized audience. It emphasizes the need to understand the reality behind the TV spectacle and to grasp the role the West plays in it...beyond the sensationalism of death and the confusion of war.
