ROOM exhibitions
ROOM is a small artist run initiative, situated in a
marginal
area of Rotterdam: Rotterdam North.
After traveling
around
making projects and exhibitions in disused shop spaces
we found
a home in
Benthuizerstraat 96.
We like to present our activities in an informal
atmosphere and
much is dependent of the enthusiasm the participating
artists
bring along while making their shows.
We always try to
bring at
least two people together on basis of content and/or
formal
aspect of their work as we'd like to function as a
meeting place
of artists, ideas and the public.
We strive to bring together Rotterdam and non-Rotterdam
artist,
established and non-established artists as to stimulate
exchange
of ideas and experiences. The exhibitions take place on
a
regular, monthly basis.
Next to the exhibitions there are three mayor focus
points:
* Exchanges between like-minded initiatives
ROOM would like to function as a link in the network of
artist
run spaces.
As soon as you start a space a network
between
colleagues develops really fast and there's great
interest in
using each others spaces and learning in practise of
each others
approaches in the practice of making exchanges.

We have our own record label that puts out music and
sound
pieces by artists.
The sleeves are made by visual
artists. This
way there's a meeting of sight and sound in a cheap
multiple in
a small edition of 30pcs.

Central to the idea of ROOM as a meeting place stands
the table
that was specially developed for us. By it's design it
can be
varied in form according to it's different purposes.
Karin de
Jong developed a concept for small meetings at this
table. A
'host' is invited to 'put to the table' an issue or
specialism
and discuss it with a select group of participants.
Each
participants brings along a bag of take-away food.
Thus
a
reversal takes place: a meal that is often eaten alone
becomes
cement for a conversation in an informal atmosphere.
These
events are not public but they become that through a
related
publication after a few of these events have taken
place.
