What is folkBALTICA?

folkBALTICA is a new festival of national und international significance. It provides a unique stage for Nordic and Baltic music culture, as well as from Russia, Poland and Germany.

The annual folkBALTICA is held two weeks before Ascension Day in Flensburg and the neighbouring German-Danish border region.

After jazz (Jazzbaltica) and classical music (Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival), folk music presented in a contemporary form is the third cornerstone of the spectrum of major music festivals in Schleswig-Holstein.

Schleswig-Holstein’s culture minister Ute Erdsiek Rave has spoken of FolkBALTICA as being a “new lighthouse on the musical horizon of Schleswig-Holstein”.

folkBALTICA is a partner of “VISION Schleswig-Holstein” the 2005 business and culture festival organised by the Kiel & Flensburg Chambers of Commerce.

Who is folkBaltica?

The festival is also receiving a great degree of attention and acceptance in the Nordic countries. FolkBALTICA is a member of arsbaltica, the Baltic cultural network and is funded by the Nordic Cultural Foundation.

The festival is organised by folkBALTICA gGmbH, a non-profit organisation. Members of the association include the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Folk Schleswig-Holstein, Landesmusikrat Schleswig-Holstein e.V., the organisation of Danish speaking minority Sydslesvigsk Forening (SSF), as well as individuals from the Flensburg and Sønderjylland/Schleswig folk scene.

The Flensburg Nordpool agency is responsible for artistic direction and general management of the festival. Nordpool is run by journalist and internationally recognised Scandinavian music specialist Jens-Peter Müller.

Where is folkBALTICA?

Flensburg and the Sønderjylland/Schleswig region

Flensburg, the Gate to Scandinavia, lies at the heart of one of Europe’s oldest cultural landscapes, on the idyllic Flensburg Fjord in the “Danish south seas”. The Sønderjylland-Schleswig region and its festival partners in Tøndern, Sønderborg, Haderslev, Husum, Unewatt, Kappeln and Eckernförde have a joint 700-year history. Up to the war of 1864 the region was Danish, then German. In the plebiscite of 1920 the northern part voted to belong to Denmark. There are very active Danish and German minorities on the respective sides of the border.
