For her Bossie Series, Hannelie Coetzee imported 30 metres of photographic paper, ripped out the ceiling and built enormous developing trays in the darkroom. A ladder and an assistant were needed just to reach the enlarger.

Professional photographer Hannelie Coetzee launched the 'Bossie' Series, her first solo exhibition, at the Bell-Roberts Photographic Gallery in Cape Town during the Month of Photography in March 2002, and received rave reviews during the Rooms on View 2002 Expo at the Sandton Convention Centre in May. As a result, the 'Bossie' Series was selected as the opening show for the revamped and re-launched Photoza Photographic Gallery on July 1, 2002.
Even though this series can be described as traditional photography, Hannelie Coetzee has put her own spin on things. By using minimum depth of field she transforms the shrubs into representing an infinity of shapes and shades of grey. Very little is in focus and every blur is important. Every shade of grey is essential. She creates a sensual, almost velvet surface that challenges conventional photography.
This body of work consists of 10 archival silver prints with sizes ranging from 1950mm x 1260mm to 1260mm x 870mm. The huge scale of these prints accentuates the microcosms Coetzee captured on film. The minimum focus points represents moments of clarity in a sometimes chaotic world.
