comunicato stampa

OFF-Art Fair Brussels 2012 offers an original concept to the forty galleries invited, each of which will exhibit a duo of artists. The selection will be judged according to strict artistic criteria. These explanations give meaning to the OFF Fair and mark its place in the history of art, while guided tours will prove their worth for art lovers.

OFF-Art Fair Brussels 2012 will be located in the heart of Europe’s capital, in the Bourse (Brussels Stock Exchange) building – an imposing structure by architect Léon-Pierre Suys, built at the end of the 19th century in the ‘Neo-Renaissance and Second Empire’ styles.

The choice of location for the fair is obviously paramount. Contemporary art is going to the people. It is opening up to schools, reserving a half day of tours for them. It is allowing visitors from Brussels and elsewhere to take back a symbolic location that has long been closed to the public.

The City of Brussels recently took over the management of the building, and OFF-Art Fair Brussels 2012 will be its first tenant.

Constructed between 1868 and 1873 on Boulevard Anspach in Brussels and based on plans by architect Léon-Pierre Suys, the Bourse was part of the programme to sanitise and beautify the city, cover the Senne and create city-centre boulevards. This imposing monument, built on the site of the old butter market, met the vital need to create a centre for the city’s burgeoning business. Combining grandeur with fantasy, the eclectic building mixes Neo-Renaissance and Second Empire styles amid a multitude of decorative details and sculptures by well-known artists such as the illustrious Auguste Rodin.

OFF-Art Fair Brussels 2012 curator: Antonio Nardone.
