comunicato stampa

The Manchester Contemporary is delighted to announce the details of the fourth edition of the art fair, to be held 28-30 September 2012 with a private view on 27 September. This year’s fair will see an elite selection of galleries come together to present works by both emerging and established, British and international artists. Attracting galleries from across the country, The Manchester Contemporary continues to be the foremost destination for art collectors outside the capital.

Last year the fair attracted over 5,000 visitors, highlighting the relevance that a contemporary art fair has in the north of England. The fair prides itself on being one of the few places outside London that collectors can rely upon to source the best in contemporary art. Its main purpose is to propagate and educate both existing and new collectors with a multi-faceted programme of curatorial content, collector events as well as talks and tours.

The Manchester Contemporary has formed several mutually-beneficial relationships with local arts establishments which each help to build the overall fair experience. Through these partnerships it is hoped that the fair can bring critically engaged art to a wider audience. Following the success of last year’s fair, curatorial coordination will be provided by The International 3, who bring together galleries, project spaces and artist collectives, to create a diverse yet consistently high standard of artwork.

To supplement the already vibrant programme, The Manchester Contemporary will also offer a series of events including talks by curators and artists as well as guided tours of the fair. Highlights include a talk by Beatrice Hodgkin, author of Affordable Contemporary Art: A Guide to Buying and Collecting and Design Editor of ArtInfo as well as the chance to learn more about the work of project spaces such as Paper, Castlefield Gallery and the Chinese Arts Centre, all based in Manchester.

Last year the fair also introduced a VIP Collector Programme, in association with the Manchester Art Gallery and the Contemporary Art Society. Their members were given access to exclusive events and studio visits as well as attending lunches hosted by renowned collectors Robert Devereux and Cathy Wills. The highlights of this year’s programme include the private view and artist talks at The Manchester Contemporary combined with a trip to the Liverpool Biennial.

“Manchester Contemporary represents an unrivalled opportunity outside of London to see and buy affordably priced and carefully selected works of art by a wide range of artists who are attracting interest nationally and internationally. Supported by a programme of events designed to make buying art as accessible and enjoyable as possible, and staged in one of the UK’s most dynamic and creative cities, Manchester Contemporary is an unmissable event in the British arts calendar.” Paul Hobson, Director of the Contemporary Art Society
