Cyprien Gaillard

Julia Stoschek Collection, Dusseldorf

Number Eleven. The exhibition offers a concentrated overview of Gaillard's films alongside works on paper in sculptural displays, made in the mid-2000s, to recent works made especially for the presentation at the Julia Stoschek Collection.

comunicato stampa

The upcoming exhibition at the Julia Stoschek Collection is dedicated to French artist Cyprien Gaillard (born 1980 in Paris, lives and works in New York and Berlin).

Cyprien Gaillard often starts a new work by seeking out artifacts, monuments or architectural creations which seem to have lost their significance in present time. His nomadic gaze takes in backdrops both urban and natural, manicured and wild, focusing on spots where beauty has evolved from decay or where violence has left scars on the landscape. Thus the artist vividly depicts the times and places where our present-day economic and cultural needs interact with architectural legacies or the cultural heritage of a region. Each of Gaillard’s film works orbits in its own ways the myths surrounding the various settings, describing how outworn utopian urges or belief systems collide with current social conditions and political realities.

The exhibition offers a concentrated overview of Gaillard’s films alongside works on paper in sculptural displays, made in the mid-2000s, to recent works made especially for the presentation at the Julia Stoschek Collection. The exhibtion will be accompanied by a public programme consisting of lectures, as well as the monthly Studio 54 film programme, for which Gaillard has selected other film positions.

The highlight of the exhibition is the 3-D film Nightlife (2015). For the first time, the Julia Stoschek Collection will collaborate with an external institution to exhibit the work off-site. The large-format film will be exhibited at the K20–Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. Nightlife will be on show there from January 30 to March 20, 2016.

On the occasion of the exhibition, a bilingual brochure will be published, with texts on individual works and an essay by Natalia Valencia Arango (independent curator based in Mexico City), including an in-depth discussion of Nightlife.
