Santa Barbara is recognized nationally and internationally as a major arts destination. Ten Artists Studio Tour is a prime example of the high quality and unique fine art to be viewed and acquired here.

Art lovers and collectors are invited to meet ten highly individual stars of the rich Santa Barbara art scene in their working studios: Susan Belloni, Kris Buck, Judi Doernberg, Ron Freese, Sally Hamilton, Jevine Karys, Cree Mann, Margaret Nadeau, Rob Robinson, and Peter Worsley, all in beautiful Santa Barbara locations.

Their great variety of mediums include oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, pastels, collage and assemblage. The subjects of these fascinating artists are equally diverse: figurative, abstract, representational, landscape, streetscape, architectural, florals, animals, plein air, still life, and humor. The artists' studios are as imaginative and varied as their art.

This is art to feed the soul, for unique gifts and to enhance homes, offices and public spaces. Collectors, art lovers and gift givers will have the advantage of purchasing fine art at studio prices without the additional gallery fees, and may enjoy in one adventurous, rewarding weekend visiting all these artists who are in close proximity within easy driving distance.

Free maps and color brochures can be obtained by calling 805-967-9324 and also can be picked up at: Gallery 113 at 1114 State Street in La Arcada Court; Santa Barbara Visitors Center on Cabrillo Boulevard at Garden Street; and at Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum at 653 Paseo Nuevo on the second floor level near De La Guerra Street.

Susan Belloni, "Painting, for me, is a happy struggle between the attempt to create what I intend and the final painting, which often surprises me. This unpredictability is part of the soul and magic of making a painting. Being outdoors, painting on location, is a joy since so much of our lives is spent indoors and with machinery. For the viewer, art can also be a silent contemplation and respite in our busy and noisy world. I would be happy if my paintings provided that. My passion is also to combine my interests in art and environmental fundraising because I know our natural world is the ultimate source of our well-being and survival."

Kris Buck, a native of Santa Barbara, has been painting with pastels over the past 3 years. She is a member of several local art associations and has received numerous awards. Kris has been to Venice, Paris, the villages of southern France, and Santa Fe, NM on her painting journeys. "I love to paint plein air because it allows me to be in wonderful places and to focus on the moment. It is always a challenge and not always successful but I'm always learning and I've had some great adventures while out painting."

Judi Doernberg says it is tough to separate her from her art because she feels she is predominantly the product of what she does. And that is her artwork. Whether with paint, paper, or any manner of "found" objects, she meticulously creates an abstract reality on canvas, or as a construction, to tell a simplified truth about her vision of the world around her, sometimes pretty, sometimes not. Always hopeful and honest.

Ron Freese came to Santa Barbara six years ago from Rochester, N.Y. and has since leaned into his art. Utilizing the benefits of having the time, the space, and the inclination, he has bridged the gap from a career as a chemical engineer to becoming a blossoming artist. He shares his work with the community and has received significant recognition for it. Vigorous brushstrokes, bold colors and a wide ranging palette set Ron's watercolors apart. Humorous and uncommon scenarios are captured with careful regard to light sources, reflections and shadows. Uniqueness of subject matter is a hallmark of Ron's art.

Sally Hamilton, a featured artist at the Arts Fund Gallery, Fielding Graduate Institute Art Gallery, Saks Fifth Avenue, Meisel Gallery of Art, Faulkner Gallery, and Gallery 113, works in acrylics, pastels and oils. She paints vibrant landscapes, still lifes and figures that have won awards at many group shows. Sally was twice President of the Santa Barbara Art Association. She is a founding member of SCAPE and 21 Artists. Sally’s studio overlooks the coastline from her Japanese style home. Jevine Karys: “I love to see pure watercolor gliding over crisp white paper. This medium is so spontaneous that each time you start a new painting anything can happen! It seems that I "see" in watercolor as I go through the day. I constantly ask myself "How can I paint that?" I paint with transparent colors almost exclusively. My paintings are realistic, and have all the elements of surprise and immediacy that only watercolor can give. After painting in this medium for many years it is still my favorite way to get my ideas across to others. I try to fill my paintings with light and sparkle. When someone takes one of my paintings home I want them to treasure it.'

Cree Mann: 'Painting has opened my senses to so many new stimuli over the years. The opportunities to behold and then capture beauty and sometimes drama are endless. The complete engagement of my mind with my latest project is therapeutic and hypnotic---I can't stay away from it and constantly turn over in my mind how I will cope with its challenges, effectively obliterating other concerns. That's where the therapy comes in!'

Margaret Nadeau is a skilled plein air painter of landscapes in oils. She mostly paints scenes of and around Santa Barbara. Large or small they depict the coastlines, gardens and the grandeur of our high mountains that rise behind Santa Barbara. Color, contrasts and glowing light inspire her to capture the emotional attraction to a scene she is painting. Margaret has trained in art at UCLA and has studied painting with several nationally known artists. She shares: "To me painting is like a spiritual experience".

Rob Robinson speaks movingly: 'With all that’s going on in the world today, which for the most part we have little to say, the act of painting is a chance for me to resolve life as I would like to see it, if only for a moment, in the world of the two dimensional canvas. The paintings in this show were all painted on location in plein air and were a joy to create. They gave me some peace and my hope is that those viewing them may for a moment, rest there, too.'

Peter Worsley, Coordinator for Ten Artists Studio Tour: 'My home is also my gallery. You are welcome to wander through and view my hanging paintings and my studio. I will be delighted to discuss any painting, my inspirations for its creation, my thoughts about the results, and my techniques used in its generation. I have just finished my first diptych “Beach Walking”. These large paintings depict a favorite of mine, Miramar Beach, Montecito, just east of Santa Barbara. Today, all my paintings are primarily painted using gouache (opaque watercolor). I often start with a wash of transparent watercolor, but soon overpaint the details with opaque color. I like gouache because of its boldness and flexibility.'
