CET returns for a third year and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Good news for those of us who have been hoping for a repeat of last year’s sensational art and design event “Tokyo Designers’ Block Central East (TDB-CE)” which gained audiences of over 50,000, and involved more than 100 artists in vacant spaces in the central east area of Tokyo. The event is back, reconceived and re-branded CET05 and promising to attract as much if not more attention. The theme of the event for this year is “Street Culture Tokyo”, adopting a philosophy of regeneration through artistic endeavor, in the spirit of New York’s Chelsea, London’s East End, and Shanghai’s Moganshang-road.

“We have seen a huge amount of national and international interest in this event which reflects the importance of Japanese contemporary culture,” says Chief Curator Yukiko Harada “and I am delighted that we are able to repeat this innovative and exciting event which is woven into the urban fabric of Tokyo, and reflects the vitality of the city.”

The event is composed of two main parts - “Heritage/Garbage: Desire and Destination of Akihabara Culture”, a specially curated show located in a single space in Akihabara, and “CET Alternative”, which spread out over the whole of this area, seeks to once more pair a large number of young, emerging artists with the empty and derelict spaces available in this part of Tokyo.

“Heritage/Garbage” seeks to address ideas surrounding preconceptions about Japanese and international contemporary art, which is often seen as pop ? a pastiche of Manga, Anime and Pokemon. “Behind this pop culture facade Japan has a strong identity based on powerful and deep-rooted desire of Otaku culture based in Akihabara, and an awe of those aspects of the world that are immediately visible or understandable” says Harada, going on to add “7 international artists working with a range of media have been selected whose work most represents this opportunity to glimpse another private world.” It is likely that this will resonate strongly with contemporary art audiences eager for something more than pop.

“CET Alternative” consists of art installations by 50 artists who will occupy 30 empty buildings. The art installations cover a variety of disciplines some of which visitors might find surprising. As well as the more traditional “fine arts” such as photography and drawing visitors can see design, urban planning, fashion, and music installations. Scheduled events taking place over the ten days include a live music performance by a “Jazz Giant” Randy Weston from New York at Kanda-Myojin Shrine, a series of workshops, a series of artists’ talk, and many parties! Local community members, whose support has been so crucial for the success of CET05, will be included in all the events. Visitors should also watch out for a series of related symposiums (Japanese/English) relating to the art community, urban development, architecture, and design, details of which are on the website soon.

CET05 is supported by a large number of major international corporations as well as local businesses eager to promote a landmark event that will add to the prosperity of the whole area.
