Finnish fotography from the 21st century

The Helsinki School represents an approach that has grown out of a process of teaching from the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland. It consists of photographers who have either taught, graduated or attended university in the past 25 years. This exhibition is a dialogue between selected artists from the four different generations. It represents the cross-section of conceptual thinking, the cutting edge of where photography is today.

SUMMER OF PHOTOGRAPHY

The impact of photography on the contemporary culture of images is obvious and unprecedented. Photography has become intertwined with every facet of social, professional and private life, as well as fiction and non-fiction.

In recent years, the development of technologies and digital image processing are confronting us with a mixture of all disciplines in a kind of joyful cross-over. And a few outstanding exhibitions have convinced us of the influence of this enormous potential on contemporary art. Digital manipulation to illustrate this phenomenon is increasingly turning into full-time artistic activities, such as multimedia projects, internet sites, image projections and inkjet print-outs… A multitude of stimuli for contemporary creativity.

In this context, the Click Doubleclick exhibition offers a vision of contemporary photography. A number of major Belgian and foreign photographers today are represented here, as well as a large selection of as yet little-known artists. In addition, Click Doubleclick, one of the biggest exhibition of its kind ever organised in Brussels, is the anchorage point for a series of events relating to photography, under the title Summer of Photography.

For this first ‘Summer’, the Centre for Fine Arts has invited many places and institutions to organise, regularly or on a once-off basis, photography-linked events, which can be integrated into the event’s programme. This festival has a twofold aim : first, to show off the advantages of Brussels and other Belgian towns on the European photographic scene by bringing together a large number of actors wishing to contribute to the event, and second, to offer different types of images and ways of exhibiting in order to stimulate reflection that will fuel the next edition of this biennial.

We should like to thank our partners for their commitment and for the enthusiasm with which they welcomed this Summer of Photography and also the Minister-President of the Brussels Capital Region for the support on communication and coordination of the project.

En l’e'tat actuel du projet, les pages qui suivent offrent un survol de l’offre de cette manifestation, au fil des propositions des diffe'rents partenaires mais aussi des apports spe'cifiques du festival accueillis en certains lieux pour l’occasion.
