Oskar Nilsson 'Hello Noir / (secret supper) / Memories from Provance'

For his second solo presentation at the gallery Oskar Nilsson (1976 Ulricehamn, Sweden) shows new paintings. Paintings that plunge into a world of personal mythology and homemade symbolism. Dark and at the same time layered with humour the paintings take the viewer through subterranean twilight landscapes where mushrooms flourish and strange monuments have been raised for uncertain purposes. The works combine an appetite for painting and issues of various kinds of consuming and escapism.

“A recurring dream / recurring theme. We are walking around in the night, the mood is a bit illegal; a bit unclear what the aim is. All of a sudden we are situated on a rooftop next to an air ventilation drum. We climb inside. Finding ourselves on the top floor in a museum or so, a concept-Kunsthalle. Huge walls with small black and white photos of angles. We soon get quite bored of it and start to look for the exit, but realizes that the alarm will go of if the door out is opened.

Then M. shows up and pulls a computer chip out of the wall, and asks if we know the password so the door can be opened. At that moment I feel almost as an out of body experience that the code is the first line of lyrics from Creedence Clearwater Revival’s song Proud Mary (although strange that such an unminimal song guards the white halls showing pictures of angles from some forgotten modernist architect, I thought to myself). I start to quote wildly from most of their songs but Proud Mary’s first phrases just never come. B. turns around and says the right phrases. M. taps it in on the computer chip, the door opens up so we can walk out to the folky swamp tune.

We rumbled on, into the night. We rumbled into the night heavy on rum, our exploration became quite random as we also got hold on some mescaline. The frogs quacking their hymns to hot lady frogs somewhere in a mud pool, or could I confuse it with the humming-bird, a completely different species? “Well, horny amphibians or just stupid canaries”, I said out loud to myself with no particular aim.”

Mattijs van den Bosch - "Paintings 2005-2006"

17 February - 17 March 2007

From 17 February through 17 March 2007 Mattijs van den Bosch (1964 Rabat, Morocco) will show a selection of his acrylics from 2005 and 2006 in the gallery’s back space. Some of these paintings have been exhibited previously, for others it’s their first time.
A number of them are still based on standard colours, in the painting mode embraced by Van den Bosch for so many years. But recently he has abolished this familiar procedure and has been looking for renewal. Some of these new works are shown here. And the viewer will find that his choice of subject matter (street scenes and working men) has remained the same.
This fall Mattijs van den Bosch will show his most recent works at De Praktijk.
Mattijs van den Bosch lives and works in Amsterdam.
