This artistic and cultural manifestation seeks to illustrate the period between the two
world wars in the first half of the 20th century. Visual art from the nineteen-twenties
and -thirties is displayed in the context of events that influenced Rotterdam.
The rapid
economic and urban development, the cultural climate and the influence of North
America, Europe and the own colonies, the threats of emerging fascism and
communism and the economic downturn of the early nineteen-thirties. Objects and
images from the Rotterdam Collection are on display with the assistance of all
Rotterdam museums, the Municipal achieves and Library.
The exhibition includes
Interbellum artworks from the museum depots, industrial designs, as well as
architecture, urban planning and landscape designs, first editions of well-known
books, graphics, posters, photographs and film clips and other images of popular
theatre and entertainment. The era is filled with contradictions and paradoxes. The
exhibition tells its story both through form and content and presents us with multiple
versions of a same history.
