comunicato stampa

The “Photomonth in Krakow” is one of the leading European photography festivals; a cultural event on an unprecedented scale with a very high artistic rank. Every year the programme of the festival consists of nearly 50 individual and collective displays. Their important supplements are numerous concurrent entertainments: demonstrations of film slides, projections of documentary films, lectures, workshops, and discussions as well as portfolio reviews. The festival’s events take place in the best Cracovian galleries, cafes, pubs and places adapted for the duration of the festival.

Artists from the absolute world best as well as the creators, conquering currently renowned galleries and festivals around the whole world were invited to take part in the 5th edition of the “Photomonth in Krakow”. The Special Guest country of the 2007 Festival will be Germany, and the role of guest superintendent will be undertaken by Mark Power, photographer of the prestigious Agency Magnum.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MAY IN KRAKOW
Similarly like last year, for the entire month of May, Krakow will be overcome by photography. Festival exhibitions will be presented in a dozen or so of the best galleries of the city, and also in famous Cracovian pubs and cafes, as well as places tailored for this event’s needs. The festival will be the only opportunity to the look round at the antique interiors of Goetz Palace in the former Okocim Brewery, as well as the halls of the Steven Spielberg praised ”The Enamel” Factory of Oscar Schindler.

The novelty of this year's edition is the series of exposures, presented - in accordance with a global trend - in private flats in the centre of Krakow. The ”Photomonth in Krakow” is set on urban ground, and the systematic sightseeing of the exhibitions gives the opportunity to study the city from its core and to view the places normally not mentioned by guidebooks.

The Festival is going to begin with a modest exposition in the Starmach Gallery on Friday, 4th May at 5 PM. On first week of the event - from 4 to 13 May - all expositions and the concurrent events are planned: certainly this will be the best time to visit the former capital of Poland. The great majority of exhibitions will be displayed from the first day of the Festival to the end of May 2007. The detailed programme, together with the schedule of events as well as the plan of the city with marked festival locations, is available in all galleries, tourist information points, hotels, cinemas, pubs and cafes.

ALL THE BEST IN WORLD-WIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
The programme of the 5th edition of this Cracovian festival will consist of almost 50 individual and collective exhibitions. Among the invited artists, is both the world-wide famous photography: young creators conquering the hearts of an international audience, as well as the most interesting artists from Poland. The artistic level of the ”Photomonth in Krakow 2007” will undoubtedly strengthen its position as one of the most interesting photography festivals in Europe.

Germany as a special Festival guest
Annually, the organizers of the Festival prepare an extensive a display of photography from one country - the Special Guest country of the Festival. In 2007, this role was extended to our western neighbours. This extremely important event will feature the exhibition of August Sander: the legend of global photography, the precursor of a sociological portrait. The achievements of Sander's heirs will be known by the Cracovian public with the exhibition entitled ”Appearing / disappearing - the German Album - Contemporary German photography”. It will consist of works by artists mainly related with the so-called ”Düsseldorf School”. However, an opportunity to meet the achievements of young creators with classics' works and current masters will be seen in the exhibition ”Disappointed Hopes - New Romanticism in contemporary German photography”. Both collective presentations were prepared especially for the Photomonth.

Society in times of danger
The subsequent event, with the highest of world rank, is a block of five exhibitions, presented in frames of the project ”The theatres of war”. Its administrator is Mark Power, member of the Magnum Agency: well-known to the Polish public thanks to the exhibition ”Eurovisions” (presented in the CSW in Warsaw in 2006). The invited authors - Luc Delahaye, Christopher Stewart, Donovan Wylie, Geert van Kesteren and Lisa Barnard - through their exhibitions, they comment on the current problem of global danger and its social consequences. The exceptional location – the interiors of the former enamelled dishes factory of Oscar Schindler adds dramaturgy to this exceptional performance.

Distinguishing Marks
More than ten individual exhibitions presented as a block is the core of the main programme ”Distinguishing Marks”, and are the author's choice of the administrators of the festival. In May, the absolute world leaders of photography (Martin Parr, Anders Petersen, Oliver Sieber, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin) will arrive in Krakow, the authors of a young generation (Tomas Agat Blonski, Sergei Bykov, Hynek Alt and Alexandra Vajd) standing at the path to a world wide career and also, superb creators from Poland (Przemek Pokrycki, Aneta Grzeszykowska, Rafał Świątek, Mark Gardulski).

PROMOTION & EDUCATION - off Programme, portfolio reviews, lectures, meetings...
Traditionally, in frames of the Photomonth, a dozen or so projects, chosen from among many applications sent by artists of all generations will be presented. For some of them, it will be the first opportunity to show to wide audience. For others, it is the first - night performance in Poland. The organizers of the Festival set out to promote young and talented artists. Viewing of their achievements by the thousands from the audience is the ideal opportunity for this.

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to increase one's skills, because there is an exceptional cast in this year's review of portfolios. Well-known personalities from the world of photo confirmed their parts such as: Adam Broomberg (the photo editor of ”Colors” magazine), Michael Famighetti (the photo editor of ”Aperture” magazine), Kyoko Jimbo (the administrator of the Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Tokyo), Markus Schaden (the manager of Schaden.com publishing house), and lecturers, critics and administrators from Poland (like Marek Grygiel, Tomasz Tomaszewski, Witold Krassowski, Ireneusz Zjeżdżałka). Vladimir Birgus, Miro Švolik, Andrea Domesle, Michael Staab, and Peter Bialobrzeski are some of those who will present with the lectures. Furthermore, in the week of its opening (4-13 May 2007) it will be possible to personally meet practically all the authors of the exhibitions, included as a programme of the festival.

Other attractions, which one should not miss this year, are the exhibitions of document films and workshops. In the evenings, on the first and second weekend of May, there will also be some time for good party - concerts and electronic music will be performed as excellent DJ's will accompany demonstrations of slide shows.

We invite you to Krakow in May 2007!
