Back to nature

The 36th President of the United States Lyndon B Johnson commented on leisure time and said "A nation on wings and wheels, we have more free time than any other people in history. This is the blessing and could be the curse of a progressive and successful civilization." (1969)

Working from factual publications such as National Geographic and Life World Library, Lisa Penny re-works images to reassess the modern belief we can achieve whatever we want and the inevitable dilemma this concept brings.
We are socially and geographically more mobile than previous generations and are apart of a merry-go-round of choice.
Lisa humorously looks at the predicament of choice, presenting characters in a state of flux, some battling with self-preservation, others with inflated self-belief, these 'victims' all hoping to improve their circumstances often with pathetic, bizarre results.

Found images, are subverted to tell a different narrative. Often the digital collages are placed in the context of a museum display or an information board as found in waiting rooms or libraries. Objects figuratively restructured, painted or combined with other materials, old against new creating an illusion of an archaeological discovery. A dialogue is created between the image and the object. Sometimes the image is reassessed in another format. Perhaps a drawing, where details of the original are re-examined from another angle, collecting further information on the image or object.

Lisa Penny lives and works in London. She attended the Byam Shaw School of Art, London, and the Leeds Metropolitan University. She joined among others the Tihany International Postgraduate Programme of the Hungarian Arts Academy and Goldsmiths College London. Contact: lisapenny66(at)hotmail.com
