Transforms Objects Into Art and Pays Homage to Guitar Legend Johnny Cash

VENICE, CA - Dave Newman, the pop-culture collage artist/painter who transforms everyday objects into art, is the featured artist in October at Altered Space Gallery (1221 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, CA 90291; 310-452-8121), opening Saturday, October 20th, 6-9 pm. The exhibit, “Mixed Bag”, features some of Newman’s latest mixed media and assemblage works, including the Johnny Cash-inspired “Guitar Man” (24x24”; mixed media on wood), “King of Nothing” (59x31”), “W” (24x19”), and “Woodpecker” (15x24”).

Dave Newman’s creations are inspired by everyday objects, music, and pop culture images. His collages evoke themes of the West: cowboys and cowgirls, roadside signs and abandoned motels, vintage advertising and nostalgia. Newman’s paintings are colorful celebrations of common yet iconic imagery such as coffee cups, television, hearts, and the spaces we live in. Over the last several years, Dave’s become the official poster artist for the “P. F. Chang's Rock and Roll Marathon” in Phoenix. Newman also teamed with the Fender Musical Instruments Company to create one-of-a-kind art guitars featuring matching amplifiers and cases. His work has been featured in Fender’s celebrated Frontline Magazine, annual Fender Custom Shop guitar calendars, as well as in Southwest Art, Prescott Living and Phoenix Home & Garden magazines.

“Sometimes my art begins on the side of the road where I've found an interesting object,” Newman explains. “I search garage sales, junk yards, and antique swap meets for items I can work into a painted collage construction. I use photos I've taken, acrylic paint, wood, metal, silk-screened images in addition to the found objects to weave a story with my work. The inspiration for these assemblage pieces comes from juxtaposing unusual objects of wood or metal—combining their shapes, textures and patinas—in a way that is visually exciting or interesting, and that can stand on their own as a piece of art. It is hard to part with these objects sometimes because they’re often one-of-a-kind and can never be found again!”
