A Place Like Any Other...

Galleri Tommy Lund, Copenhagen

It is a great pleasure to present the first solo exhibition with Pia Ronicke at Gallery Tommy Lund. The video work ''A Place Like Any Other...'' was produced in connection with Moderna Museet Projekt and was installed in the library of the Culture House in the centre of Stockholm. The placement of the video installation in the Culture House was important because it brought accessibility for many different people to watch the piece.

It is a great pleasure to present the first solo exhibition with Pia Ronicke at Gallery Tommy Lund.

The video work "A Place Like Any Other..." was produced in connection with Moderna Museet Projekt and was installed in the library of the Culture House in the centre of Stockholm. The placement of the video installation in the Culture House was important because it brought accessibility for many different people to watch the piece. The library is the place where people from all over Stockholm go to read the newspaper - you can find in 50 different languages. It is one of the only places where you find a multi-cultured center in Stockholm City.

A housing area in Bredäng - a southwest suburb of Stockholm - is the centre of the video piece. Bredäng is a part of the so-called "Million Dwelling Project" from the mid 60s to the early 70s, in which identical residential buildings in prefabricated elements were built and placed in the landscape around Stockholm - in this case, a beautiful green and hilly area near lake Mälaren.

The video installation: "A Place Like Any Other..." consists of two video pieces. One is based on interviews with the residents in the housing area. The questions were general and could be raised in any community, for example: "Do you have any possibility to influence you housing areas?", "Do you believe in local democracy and how do you define that ?". The generality of the questions nevertheless reflects something very specific about the area. The second video follows an architectural tour in the area of Bredäng. "The Architecture and Cultural Environment of Stockholm" arrange public tours to the suburbs. The tour guide presents Bredäng as a site of architectural importance, and talks about the area from an aesthetical and structural point of view, very much as it was considered when it was built - like a sculpture park seen from above...

Bredäng is a place with over 60 different nationalities, but is often defined by a certain media image and has no ‘face’ outside of this frame. In many suburbs the polls are lower than 50 % at elections, and people living here have little economical and political power to make a change in the ‘big’ picture of Stockholm, even in their own local environment. The city planning of the 60s divided dwellings from shops and working areas. The city center of Bredäng is dying out, threaten by the big mall in the neighbour suburb. The general question is how can we make democratic and creative surroundings in our living area and how do we define those and for whom. Is it possible to define a community and find any mutual interest at all ?

Pia Rönicke would like to thank Åsa Sonjasdotter, Alexander Vaindorf, Johan Phillips, and Maria Lind for their help in the production of this piece.
