Reina 76 & Scot Thompson
MICHALI FINE ART GALLERY is proud to present "The good times are killing me"
an exhibition of works by Reina 76 and Scot Thompson, on view from August
8th through September 15th, 2009.
Reina 76 pictures our pop icons using layers of acrylic color outlined with
acrylic pen lines that are scribbled and imperfect. She wants to “paint for
minds that bend in ways society cannot see. For the perceived mentally
insane”.
Using the same process of representation of his psyche, Scot Thompson
interprets his obsession with destruction and abstraction of figures in a
unique technique combining wood, iron, bronze and other strong and natural
materials.
Their sceptical approach to conventional symbols finds eloquent expression
in the naturalism and primitivism of their works, which can be traced back
to classical sources.
The visitor might advocate an alternative code of behaviour, where all
barriers set up by decorum, rank, religion, and morality should be
nullified. In a sense, they represent the tensions between ethical values
and psychological needs, between the individual and society.
Reflecting the anti-sublime treatment of what life has to offer, Reina 76
and Scot Thompson advance their own "truth" which is to a large extent a
donnée. In opposition to the traditional idealism behind the pastoral and
the love lyric, they present a visual experience which is particularly
destructive to the romantic vision of the admitted standards of simplicity
and everyday life.
Their urbanely cynical perspective transcends all restrictions imposed by
social and convention norms.
