CINEMASCOPE/ANAMORPHIC SHORTS: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 @ 7:30 PM
The siren call of the wide open screen afforded by CinemaScope and its
anamorphic projection has always been tantalizing to filmmakers. Here, we
have a group of fledgling filmmakers working in this powerful aspect ratio
as opposed to the Akira Kurosawas and Michael Ciminos known for using
widescreen to its maximum potential. Comedies, sci-fi, fantasy and drama are
all represented in this thrilling format. For more information about
co-presenter, Apollo Cinema, see www.apollocinema.com
The program begins on Wednesday, February 13 at 7:30 PM. The following films
will screen though not necessarily in the order listed here. Orlette Ruiz's
"Tango Flush" (10 min.) Ever wonder why the lines are so long outside the
ladies room? What are they doing in there? Leif Tilden's "Big Love" (11
min.) Everything is not what it seems in this very offbeat and quirky comedy
about sending the "Kids" off to school. Renaat Coppenns' "Gabriel" (12 min.)
Heaven is not so far away in this interpretation of the life of a biblical
character. (12 min.) Jacco Groen's "The Phoenix" (12 min.) Gripping drama
about stolen identities, deals with the dead, and an ego out of control.
Dirk Belien's "Black Coffee" (13 min.) A lucky young man on a game show wins
an all-expenses paid weekend with the girl of his dreams. Or so he
thinks....Yves Stenning's "Great Falls" (22 min.) Set in small-town, 1960's
Australia, an evocative, dramatic coming of age story. Eric Anderson's
"Horses on Mars" (8 min.) A microbe takes a 100 million-mile journey in this
delightfully quirky thought-provoking gem. Films will not necessarily screen
in this order. Discussion following with filmmakers Orlette Ruiz ("Tango
Flush"), Leif Tilden ("Big Love") & Eric Anderson ("Horses on Mars").
Tape Availability: A compilation video tape of these films will be available
at the American Cinematheque office.
In Spite of Himself: Patrick MacNee 80th Birthday Tribute In Person
Friday, February 15, 2002
Born in England on February 6, 1922, Patrick Macnee's stage and film career
began in 1941. He served as an officer in His Majesty's Royal Britannic Navy
from 1942 - 1946, and then resumed his entertainment career. In 1960 he
landed the role of John Steed, the suave Englishman in television's "The
Avengers," which became an international hit. MacNee went on to rolls in
such films as A VIEW TO A KILL, THIS IS SPINAL TAP and THE HOWLING. He
currently hosts the "Mysteries, Magic and Miracles" on the Sci-fi Channel,
and lives in Southern California with wife Baba.

The Friday February 15th program begins at 7:30 PM with "THE AVENGERS" --
Episode: "Death At Bargain Prices", 1965, A&E Home Video/Canal + Image
Int'l, 52 min. Steed (Patrick Macnee) buys a dozen bowler hats while Mrs.
Peel (Diana Rigg) sells some lingerie in this classic,
what-sinister-things-are-going-on-at-Pinter's Department Store? episode that
combines several of the series' favorite themes: nostalgia for the bygone
days of England; 1960's paranoia over the atomic bomb; and some surprisingly
racey double-entendres between Steed and Mrs. Peel that show the chemistry
between co-stars Macnee and Rigg at its very best. Directed by future A
FISH CALLED WANDA helmer Charles Crichton, and brilliantly written by series
co-producer and stalwart Brian Clemens. Following on the same bill is "THE
AVENGERS" - Episode: "Too Many Christmas Trees," 1965, A&E Home Video/Canal
+ Image Int'l, 52 min. Dir. Roy Baker. Written by Tony Williamson. One of
the series' most devilishly clever episodes finds Steed the target of
telepathic masterminds who are influencing his dreams in an attempt to get
secret information from him. The surreal setting for this adventure is a
Christmas Party where all the guests must dress as Dickens characters -
including Mrs. Peel, whose Tiny Tim outfit is something to be seen! A
darkly
comic gem, and one of Macnee's personal favorites from the entire "Avengers"
series. Discussion following with actor Patrick Macnee.
Mr. Macnee will also appear prior to the screening at 6:30 PM to sign copies
of his autobiographies Blind In One Ear and The Avengers & Me.
Saturday, February 16, 2002
The Saturday February 16th program begins at 5:00 PM with THE HOWLING, 1981,
91 min. Dir. Joe Dante. TV anchorwoman Dee Wallace, traumatized after
acting as bait for a Hollywood serial killer's bloody demise, takes a
sojourn in an Esalen-type retreat run by guru Patrick Macnee - only to find
the entire New Age community is made up of werewolves! Macnee's performance
here is one of his finest, a seductive blend of charm, black humor and
sinister magnetism. Co-starring Slim Pickens, John Carradine, Kevin
McCarthy and Dick Miller. Discussion following with actor Patrick Macnee.
Following at 7:45 PM is "THE AVENGERS" - Episode: "The Forget-Me-Knot",
(1968, A&E Home Video/Canal + Image Int'l, 52 min.) Dir. James Hill.
Written by Brian Clemens. Steed bids a fond farewell to Mrs. Peel (Diana
Rigg) and says hello to voluptuous young agent Tara King (played by 20-year
old Canadian Linda Thorson) in this famous episode involving a plot to
undermine the Ministry by means of an amnesia-inducing drug. For all of the
series' wicked humor and surreal imagination, its heart was always the
relationship between the magnificent Macnee and his sparkling female
partners - never more poignant than in the last parting glances shared by
Steed and Mrs. Peel ...Next on the same bill is "THE NEW AVENGERS" -
Episode: "The Eagle's Nest", 1976, A&E Home Video/Canal + Image Int'l, 52
min. Dir. Desmond Davis. Written by Brian Clemens. After a hiatus of
eight years, Steed returned to action with new partners Purdey (the
delightful Joanna Lumley) and Gambit (Gareth Hunt) in "The New Avengers,"
which managed to recapture much of the sexiness and suspense of the original
series. This, the first episode of "The New Avengers," finds Steed and his
partners traveling to a remote Scottish monastery to

stop a fiendish plot to revive the cryogenically frozen body of Adolf
Hitler. Discussion following with actor Patrick Macnee.
Tape Availability: THE HOWLING is available at commercial video stores. "The
Avengers" episodes "Death at Bargain Prices," "Too Many Christmas Trees" and
"The Forget-Me-Knot" will be available from the American Cinematheque
office. "The Eagle's Nest" is not available for press preview.
French Filmmakers Jean-Marc Barr & Pascal Arnold and Actress Elodie Bouchez
In-Person!: Wednesday, February 20, 2002 @ 7:00 PM
Known as an actor primarily for his roles in Luc Besson's THE BIG BLUE
(1988) and Lars von Trier's EUROPA (1991), Jean-Marc Barr's directorial
debut with co-writer and co-director Pascal Arnold is inspired by the
technological freedom of the digital era and the Dogma rules. Following the
technological storm resulting in the democratization of the cinema,
Jean-Marc Barr as well as the Dogma group clearly positioned themselves as a
new 'new wave' with references to '1960' 'new wave'. The Digital-to-film
transfer trilogy on freedom, called free-trilogy has been shot in English
(LOVERS, TOO MUCH FLESH and BEING LIGHT).
The Wednesday, February 20th program is a 7:00 PM double feature. First up
is LOVERS - Dogma #5, (1999, TF1 International, 100 min.) Dir. Jean-Marc
Barr. Set in Paris and shot in English, the first non-Danish DOGMA film
stars Elodie Bouchez (THE DREAM LIFE OF ANGELS) as Jeanne the radiant
bookstore saleswoman who falls in love with Yugoslav painter Dragan (Sergei
Trifunovic). Dragan's illegal immigrant situation forces the lovers apart.
With a sharp and glossy digital video to 35mm blow-up, LOVERS is a fresh and
sensitive ode to the freedom of love.
Following on the same bill is TOO MUCH FLESH, (2000, TF1 International, 109
min.) Dirs. Jean-Marc Barr and Pascal Arnold. TOO MUCH FLESH, the digital
video to 35mm blow-up follow-up to LOVERS, explores the freedom of sexuality
and pleasure in a small puritanical community in the Illinois corn-belt.
Lyle (Jean-Marc Barr), living with Amy (Rosanna Arquette) in an arranged
marriage, suddenly discovers his sexuality with a passing stranger and runs
afoul of community morals. Discussion following the films with directors
Jean-Marc Barr, Pascal Arnold and actress Elodie Bouchez.
