EUGENIO VALDES FIGUEROA (Havana, Cuba, 1963) Lives and works in Havana. Curator, art critic and art historian. Part time lecturer on African presence in the Cuban culture at the University of Havana, Cuba. During more than six years he was member of the Department of Research at the Wifredo Lam Center, Havana, Cuba. He was Researcher of Contemporary African Art and Curator of exhibitions of Contemporary Art there. He has made researches in situ about the Contemporary Sub-Saharian African art in Senegal, Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Congo, South Africa, Angola, among others countries. Co-curator of the Havana Biennials (Bienal de La Habana) until 1996. Collaborator of several art magazines: Third Text (England), Kunstforum (Germany), Atlntica Internacional (Spain), Flash Art (Italy), Loquevenga, Arte Cubano (Cuba), Amsterdam Sur (Netherlands), Arco noticias (Feria de Arco, Spain), among others. His essays has appeared in the catalogues of importants exhibitions of contemporary art: Centro Atlntico de Arte Moderno (Spain); Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver, Canada); Morris & Helen Belkin Gallery (Vancouver, Canada); Ludwig Forum fr Internationale Kunst (Aachen); ProHelvetia Foundation (Switzerland); Kunsthalle of Vienna (Austria); Wifredo Lam Center (Havana). He has offered lectures and collaborated as curator with institutions and international events in Cuba and abroad (1st Dakart Biennial, Senegal, 1992; 1st. Johannesburg Biennial, SouthAfrica, 1994; 5th Istambul Biennale; FotoFest, Houston, 1998, among others). Curator of the exhibition Crnicas de Kinshasa. Pintura contempornea de Zaire. (Centro Wifredo Lam, Havana, Cuba, 1992); curator of the group exhibition Metamorfosis del smbolo. (Centro Wifredo Lam, Havana, Cuba, 1995); co-curator of the exhibition Africa en Amrica, Vigo, Spain, 1992 (organized by the Ministry of Culture of Spain, Comision for the Fifth Centenary of the discovery of America); co-curator of the anthological exhibition Manuel Mendive. Ekuabo Ekundire (Centro Wifredo Lam, Havana, Cuba, 1994); co-curator of the exhibition Naturaleza conjurada. Uriburu, Fors y Fara (Centro Wifredo Lam, Havana, Cuba, 1996). Co-curator of the exhibitions Utopian Territories. New Art from Cuba. (Morris & Helen Belkin Gallery, U.B.C.; Contemporary Art Gallery; Access Gallery; Artspeak Gallery; Or Gallery; Western Front; Vancouver, Canada, 1997) ; La direccin de la mirada. Arte Cubano Contemporneo (organized in Switzerland by ProHelvetia Foundation, 1998); Cuba: Maps of Desire (Kunsthalle of Vienna / Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria / NIKOLAJ Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, 1999); among others. At this moment he is in charge together with Scott Watson of the anthological exhibition Tonel: Lessons of Solitude (Morris & Helen Belkin Gallery, British Columbia University, Vancouver, Canada. March, 2000). Collaborator of the Contemporary Art Gallery and the Morris & Helen Belkin Gallery (British Columbia University), Vancouver, Canad. He has belonged to the Editorial Council of the art magazine Atlntica Internacional, of the Centro Atlntico de Arte Moderno, Spain. Art critic and curator freelance, he is member of UNEAC (Unin de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba) and curating member of the Fundacin Ldwig de Cuba.
