A panel discussion with three internationally-respected artists who have made conceptual art of the sixties and seventies both subject and point of departure of their current work. While acknowledging aesthetic, discursive, and political debts to "historical" conceptual art, Green, Kolbowski, and Prina have reworked the conceptual art canon so as to extend pertinent debates in terms of the historical legacy of conceptual art and contemporary art production.

A panel discussion with three internationally-respected artists who have made conceptual art of the sixties and seventies both subject and point of departure of their current work. While acknowledging aesthetic, discursive, and political debts to "historical" conceptual art, Green, Kolbowski, and Prina have reworked the conceptual art canon so as to extend pertinent debates in terms of the historical legacy of conceptual art and contemporary art production. For this panel discussion, the artists will each make a presentation of their own work, followed by a roundtable discussion. Simon Leung will serve as moderator.
Renee Green is an artist and writer who lives in New York and Vienna. She is a faculty member of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna. Green's recent work, "Shadows and Signals" was presented at the Antonì Tapiès Foundation, Barcelona 2000. Her work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the ICA London; the Venice Biennale; the Kwangju Biennial; the Whitney Biennial; and last year at the Vienna Secession. This fall, Green will present new projects at the Swiss Institute, New York, and the Centro Cultural de Belem, Lisbon. The publications "Shadows and Signals" and "Between and Including" will be available this fall.
Silvia Kolbowski is a New York based artist. Her recent work, "an inadequate history of conceptual art" was exhibited at American Fine Arts Gallery, New York; the Oliver Art Center, CCAC, Oakland; and the Whitney Biennial 2000. Kolbowski has taught at the Whitney Program, Parsons, NYU, Columbia, and Harvard, and is on the advisory board of OCTOBER magazine. Her new video "Seven x 7," will be on view at Seven, on Orchard Street, in October/November.
Stephen Prina is a Los Angeles-based artist and musician and a member of the faulty of the MFA program at Art Center, Pasadena. He has participated in Documenta and the Venice Biennale; and was recently given a one-person mid-career survey exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein. Last year, the Getty Center commissioned Prina to make "Vinyl II," a film which received its New York Premiere this Fall at the Anthology Film Archives. His next one person exhibition in New York will be at the Fredrich Petzel Gallery in February 2001.
Contemporary Returns to Conceptual Art was organized by Simon Leung. This event is co-sponsored by Nomads and Residents, the Department of Art and Art Professions, NYU, and Art Journal.
