Is the irony that the worldwide proliferation of big art events and exhibitions results not in an 'unification' or amalgamation, but fragmentation? What could be strategies of curators to deal with this problem? Or maybe it's not a problem? A workshop for young curators from various parts of the world organized by KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Forum Goethe-Institut.
On the occasion of the 4th berlin biennial for contemporary art KW Institute for
Contemporary Art and Forum Goethe-Institut have picked up an initiative of the
Allianz Cultural Foundation and the BMW Group to organize a workshop for young
curators from various parts of the world.
"What the world needs now is more biennials"
Is the irony that the worldwide proliferation of big art events and exhibitions -
despite of the existence of an elite of travelling artliteratis - results not in an
'unification' or amalgamation, but fragmentation (i.e. myriad of separate
international or local scenes that exist next to one another, taking little or no
notice of one another, yet all struggling for attention)? What could be strategies
of curators - and biennials for that matter - to deal with this problem? Or maybe
it's not a problem?
These questions will be discussed in the concluding public panel discussion at
Goethe-Institut Berlin, Neue Schonhauser Str. 20, 10178 Berlin, which will host four
of the most visible curators of recent and upcoming biennials: Zdenka Badovinac
(Director of Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana), Isabel Carlos (independent curator
and critic, Lisbon), Vasif Kortun (Director of Platform Garanti Contemporary Art
Center, Istanbul) and Okwui Enwezor (Dean of Academic Affairs and Senior Vice
President at San Francisco Art Institute), Frieze coeditor and art critic Jorg
Heiser will moderate.
The panel discussion will be held in English.
Please note, there is a limited amount of space.
