Material Bodies: Studies of the Nude
Isabella Ramsay's photographs are of both male and female nudes - a complex and provocative study of the body produced over a period of ten years. Morphe plays with the idea of 'human-animal', and is a response to developments in the field of morphogenetics and the use of hybrid embryos.
Earlier work focuses on large scale close ups of fragments of the body, constructed in the formation of landscape and offering a view of the body which is both gargantuan in proportion and delicate in its sensitivity of treatment. The photographs are reminiscent of early Weston's in their gentle play of light and shadow on the female form.
The use of text, in the form of narratives written anonymously by subjects in the photographs, challenges assumptions and reconfigures and subverts conventional perceptions of the nude. The whole creates an interaction between the audience, image and text.
