Gazing into the 21st century

Gottweig Monastery, Krems-Stein

The Second International conference on image science discusses the inventory, classification and historiography of the recent worlds of images concerning the spheres of the public, art, entertainment and science.

comunicato stampa

Never before the world of images has changed so fast and the way images are produced transformed so drastically like in the latest presence: Second Life, Micromovies, Flickr, Virtual Reality, You Tube, Visual Music, Scientific Visualisation, Google Earth etc. are keywords standing for a multitude of new possibilities for individual producing, projecting and distributing of visual material.

The image historical development from innovation, reflection till prohibition of images comes up to a global complexity in the 21st century. These transformations have hit society to a large extent unprepared. Nevertheless we have to recognize that without further development of new forms of visualization and “orders of visibility”, their reflection and criticism we will not be able to handle the burst of knowledge of our time.

Which artistic inspirations new worlds of images have to face? What influence does the medium have on the iconic character of the image? What chances and challenges do museums and image dealers face with the “liquidity” of the image?

Together with international colleagues from science and art and the keynotes Felice FRANKEL (Harvard University, MIT) and Barbara STAFFORD (Chicago) the conference will discuss the inventory, classification and historiography of the recent worlds of images concerning the spheres of the public, art, entertainment and science.
