Breathe: a meditation on claustrophobia, confinement and comfort. In his site-specific work, Lepson uses screen printed imagery, neon sculpture, and glass. This installation creates a space that is simultaneously comforting and disquieting. The viewer becomes an active participant, walking within the work and creating individual meanings both personal and political.
Breathe: a meditation on claustrophobia, confinement and comfort
July 10 July 20
Lepsons initial inspiration gained power and momentum in the political
climate that has prevailed since September 2001 as many
immigrants continue to be held in detention centers with no formal charges
brought against them.
While living near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, I found myself often walking past a
prison located nearby. The juxtaposition of my freedom
of movement with the state of confinement that existed on the other side of
those walls struck me in a powerful way and inspired this
piece.
In his site-specific work, Lepson uses screen printed imagery, neon sculpture,
and glass. This installation creates a space that is
simultaneously comforting and disquieting. The viewer becomes an active
participant, walking within the work and creating individual
meanings both personal and political.
Lepson holds an MFA in Printmaking and English literature. His solo
exhibitions include Boston, New York, and Chicago. He has held
numerous group exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Albany, Buffalo,
Boston. His recent projects in New York include an ongoing
group demonstration, Not in Our Name, an anti-war arts initiative.
