Artropolis, a celebration of arts, antiques and culture, returns to The Merchandise Mart with Art Chicago, NEXT and The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair. Art Chicago, is the international fair of contemporary and modern art, brings together the world's leading emerging and established galleries. The Antiques Fair hosts an attractive roster of high-profile speakers, charitable special events and an engaging lecture series. NEXT is an invitational exhibition of emerging art includes which features a showcase for the world's talents and an adventure in cutting-edge culture. Also 27 monumental works to be displayed in and outside the Merchandise Mart.
Artropolis®, a celebration of arts, antiques and culture, returns to The Merchandise Mart, April 30 – May 3, and will once again be anchored by three renowned shows – Art Chicago®, NEXT and The Merchandise Mart International Antiques Fair™. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience a fabulous collection of contemporary art, emerging artists and timeless antiques, all the while enjoying a wide range of world-class programming and performances from over 85 cultural partners across the city.
Following is a summary of shows taking place during Artropolis at The Merchandise Mart:
ART CHICAGO
Art Chicago, the renowned international fair of contemporary and modern art, will once again bring together the world’s leading emerging and established galleries. Now in its 30th edition, Art Chicago will offer curators, collectors, artists and art enthusiasts a comprehensive survey of current and historic work - from cutting-edge to modern masters - in a wide variety of media including: painting, photography, drawings, prints, sculpture, video and special installations.
Located on the 12th floor of The Mart, Art Chicago will feature events throughout the weekend, enticing both the novice and experienced collector. First Focus, a private Preview done in conjunction with and benefiting the Museum of Contemporary Art, followed by Professional and Opening Previews, will open Art Chicago on April 29.
Throughout the four days, cutting-edge speaker programs, Art Chicago Speaks and Converge Chicago: Contemporary Curators Forum will feature an international roster of artists, writers, curators and critics, discussing current trends and provocative issues confronting the contemporary art market. Perspective Texas will focus special programming on the Lone Star State, featuring top Texas collectors and curators from The Dallas Art Museum, Rachofsky House, Arthouse, Artspace, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, The Blanton Museum and more.
In addition, the fair will also feature onsite exhibitions including New Insight, an annual exhibition of rising MFA students from the country's most influential art programs, curated by Susanne Ghez of The Renaissance Society; Partisan, a display of works that critically explore social and political ideas; and Survey America, a floor-wide exhibit that highlights extraordinary works by artists living and working in the United States. Collectors programs include a Docent Program, which debuted successfully in 2009 to museum, corporate and school groups, led by art professionals and consultants to help patrons.

PUBLIC SCULPTURE TO BE EXHIBITED AT ART CHICAGO® 2010
27 monumental works to be displayed in and outside the Merchandise Mart
Dietrich Klinge that shares affinities to German Expressionism and outsider art; Canadian artist Rodney Graham’s psychedelic Rotary Psycho-Opticon (2008), a bicycle-powered Op-Art kinetic sculpture; the playful Blob Monster (2009) by Chicago conceptual artist Tony Tasset, which looks like a child’s multi-colored Play-Doh figure, but at 13 feet, carries an undeniable sense of goofy menace; and Chicago-based artist Dzine’s The Majestics (2008), a custom bicycle adorned with Swarovski crystals, velvet-lined seats and an imposing sound system that plays a specially made soundtrack representing the lowrider lifestyle.
“Countercurrents,” curated by artist Mimi Peterson, includes works by local Chicago artists including Nicole Beck, Michael Brown, Terrence Karpowicz and Victoria Fuller. The monumental sculptures, ranging in height from 6 to 16 feet, will line the whole length of both sides of Lower Orleans Street along the Merchandise Mart building.

The Antiques Fair will open with a Preview Party benefiting the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago on Thursday, April 29. On Friday, keynote speaker Thomas O’Brien, interior designer, founder and proprietor of Aero Studio on April 30 will welcome hundreds of guests, as he discusses his design philosophy and his new book, American Modern, featuring a survey of seven of his most influential projects ranging from traditional to modern in style.

More than an art fair, NEXT is the critically acclaimed complement fair to Art Chicago, which debuted in 2008 at The Mart. NEXT is an invitational exhibition of emerging art includes which features a showcase for the world’s talents and an adventure in cutting-edge culture. Located on the 7th Floor of The Mart, NEXT offers guests to Artropolis a portal to seeing contemporary art in new, innovative, eye-opening ways, and will include works from both commercial and non-commercial arts organizations. NEXT is dedicated to placing the newest developments in contemporary art in a truly global context, and will be showing galleries from Antwerp, Dublin, London, Melbourne, Tenerife, among others, as well as galleries from around the United States.

NEXT Talk Shop
As its name implies, NEXT addresses the future of the art world. NEXT Talk Shop, in association with CONVERGE Chicago: Contemporary Curators Forum and Art Chicago Speaks, brings together an international roster of artists, writers, curators and critics to discuss new movements, changes in the market and the outlook for museums. Important to the NEXT vision, NEXT Talk Shop is a centrally located performance and lecture space on the show floor, designed to enhance the experiential aspect of the fair.
CONVERGE Chicago | Contemporary Curators Forum
Designed to stimulate dialogue among curators, dealers, artists and art world professionals within the art fair context, CONVERGE debuted with enormous success in 2009. With past curators and art directors from museums ranging from the Whitney Museum, Hammer Museum, Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis and the Walker Art Center, and private collections such as the UBS Art Collection, Nueberger Berman and the Chambers Luxury Art Hotel, CONVERGE programs are centrally located on the NEXT show floor in the NEXT Talk Shop. Panels encompass a vibrant mix of regional, national and international curators, from apartment galleries and experimental spaces to high profile international art centers and collections. Topics address issues such as programming in the new economy and recent trends in critical art practices.
NEXT Projects and Exhibitions
Each year, NEXT mounts special exhibitions and projects throughout the show floor. NEXT’s core exhibitions and projects include The West Collection Presents the West Prize, Goffo and New Insight. Other 2009 collaborators included The Video Databank, Gallery 400, and threewalls.
Goffo: a special section at NEXT focusing on multiples, editions, artist books, prints and handmade objects. The section hosts an exceptional curated selection of presses, artist collectives and small galleries.
New Insight: an exhibition of top MFA students from some of the country's most influential graduate art programs, curated by Susanne Ghez, director of the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. A platform for new talent and innovative ideas, New Insight provides the opportunity to view work by some of the brightest young minds working in diverse graduate programs across the country.
