comunicato stampa

Foam presents the ‘Vrolik Collection’ as photographed by Hans van den Bogaard. This private collection of Professor Gerardus Vrolik (1775-1859) and his son Professor Willem Vrolik (1801-1863) contains anatomical, pathological-anatomical, zoological and teratological specimens. After Willem Vrolik’s death, the collection was under threat of public sale. In 1869, an Amsterdam citizens’ committee managed to acquire the collection in its entirety, and turned it over to the city. The collection forms the basis of the sizeable Vrolik Museum, which is managed by the Amsterdam Medical Centre (AMC).

Professor Gerardus Vrolik and Professor Willem Vrolik collected a range of bizarre specimens including Javanese monozygotic twins with umbilical cord and placenta.

Forces of Form brings this collection back into the limelight, exploring the museum’s rich history and displaying in color illustrations 150 of the museum’s most fascinating specimens.
