In the exhibition, the photographer experiments with ideas such as the all-seeing eye and the evil eye. He turns the viewer's role as observer around: it is the viewer that feels watched by the works on display. He also refers in his work to the myths of Medusa and the stories about Cyclops.
Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam launches on June 4 a dynamic exhibition of work by Simon Wald-Lasowski (b. Paris, 1980). For this series Wald-Lasowksi drew inspiration from 'the eye'. He set himself the challenge to reinterpret this theme, a recurring subject in art history and religion. In the course of the show, Wald-Lasowski will invite artists, designers and writers to respond to the presentation. The works that emerge, from installations to text, will be displayed successively in the exhibition.
Wald-Lasowski’s pictures may appear simple, however he uses a humorous and colourful idiom to show the real world in a different perspective. By adding absurd elements to an image he creates a sense of alienation. This is particularly evident in his previous series, Beauty is the Beast (2008) and Bags (2007). Here he gives the objects he photographs an entirely new meaning by adding a simple twist. It is through the camera that he is able to share his ironic vision of the world.

Simon Wald-Lasowski graduated in graphic design at Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2004. He has worked as a freelance photographer and art director since 2005, for clients such as Amsterdam Weekly, W139 and KesselsKramer. His work has appeared in various periodicals, including Blend, Livraison, GLU Magazine.
