Let's talk about the cracks in reality, about the gap between the world we talk about and the world that's really there. Let's talk about the self-deceptions where reality becomes too painful. Let's talk about the fictional arsenal of the mass media and consumerism, about the rhetoric of distraction and appeasement. Won't that ultimately lead us to question contemporary art, and its relationship to reality? At several locations in Berlin, the biennal brings together numerous artistic positions on the present. The biennial will be contextualized by an exhibition of Adolph Menzel (1815-1905), 'The Living Currency' with performances and works by international artists, and some Satellite Projects.

Do you believe in reality? What a question, you'll reply. Reality isn't something you believe in. It proverbially catches up with you anyway, always. But then what are we talking about here? Maybe we could talk about the fact that you so often hear people saying something was different 'in reality'? Or about why it has become so customary to add a 'really' or an 'actually' or an 'in fact' to so many of the things we say? Let's talk about the cracks in reality, about the gap between the world we talk about and the world that's really there.

But why this distinction? Because reality is always the other? Or the others? Everything that's waiting out there?
Let's talk about the self-deceptions where reality becomes too painful. Let's talk about the fictional arsenal of the mass media and consumerism, about the rhetoric of distraction and appeasement.
Won't that ultimately lead us to question contemporary art, and its relationship to reality?

From June 11 to August 8, 2010, at several locations in Berlin, the 6th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art will bring together numerous artistic positions on the present. Michael Schmidt's photographic works are the first artistic contribution to the biennial and will accompany it in the public realm and the media throughout its duration.

The biennial will be contextualized by an exhibition with works by Adolph Menzel (1815-1905), curated – at the invitation of Kathrin Rhomberg – by the American art historian Michael Fried in cooperation with the Alte Nationalgalerie|Old National Gallery and the Kupferstichkabinett|Museum of Prints and Drawings of the National Museums in Berlin.

The project George Kuchar was realized in collaboration with film scholar Marc Siegel.

Searching for the Post-Capitalist Self
e-flux journal #17, Summer 2010, guest-edited by the artist and curator Marion von Osten, as her contribution to the 6th Berlin Biennale in cooperation with e-flux journal. Satellite Projects
In cooperation with the Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts five so- called "Satellite Projects" have been developed, which, based on the 6th Berlin Biennale's contents, create alternative approaches to art and bring the local public and various social groups into dialog with the exhibition. Amongst others these include:

Mein lokales Modell and Visionsbox
Two projects in cooperation with students of the Nürtingen Primary School in Berlin- Kreuzberg.
The starting point of the projects is the architectural model of the quarter of Kreuzberg that is on display in the Kreuzbergmuseum (Adalbertstraße 95A, Berlin-Kreuzberg). It is here that the project's results are on show.
Opening: 2.7.2010, 5 pm

Werkzeug Wahrnehmung – A walk between guided tour and self experiment An approximately 1-hour walk with visually impaired and sighted persons.
Including talks and practical exercises (e. g. "Does your nose understand the 6th Berlin Biennale?"), the walk will lead to the works of the 6th Berlin Biennale and into the neighborhood of Kreuzberg.

The Satellite Projects are realized by the Institute for Art in Context at the Berlin University of the Arts, in cooperation with Förderverein Art in Context and the Nürtingen Primary School in Berlin-Kreuzberg, and are supported by Berliner Projektfonds Kulturelle Bildung.

Events
During the course of the exhibition, events will be organized for and with the public, neighborhood, and the art education team, taking place at Dresdener Strasse 14, Berlin- Kreuzberg.

Rückkopplungen – Kunst und Lebenswirklichkeiten
2.–4.7.2010
From July 2 to 4, 2010, in a project titled Rückkopplungen – Kunst und Lebenswirklichkeiten various local, national, and international approaches to participatory art education and cultural education will be presented and discussed.
The project is a cooperation with the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
