Hélio Oiticica (1937-80), one of Brazil's
most important artists, was a
leader in moving art off the canvas and into
the realm of life itself. During an
eight year stay in New York City, beginning
in 1970, Oiticica collaborated
with filmmakers and other artists to create
quasi-cinemas - groundbreaking
environments that combined film, slide
projections, and music with
hammocks, balloons and sand, to immerse the
viewer in multi-sensory
experience. These legendary works,
incorporating images of Jimi Hendrix,
Marilyn Monroe, and other pop icons of the
era, are exhibited together in
New York for the first time since their
creation.
Hélio Oiticica: Quasi-cinemas (including
works in collaboration with Neville
D'Almeida) is co-organized and presented by
the New Museum of
Contemporary Art, the Kölnischer
Kunstverein, and the Wexner Center for
the Arts. This exhibition is a collaboration
with the Projeto Oiticica of Rio
de Janeiro, a non-profit organization
dedicated to expanding international
awareness of Helio Oiticia's work.
