BINGO! Imagine you are standing in a cavernous, candlelit theater space in
Williamsburg, Brooklyn, beer in hand, watching a live band. Sounds
reasonable, right? Now imagine that theres a reconstructed vaudeville
cabaret stage in front of you, airlifted, it seems, from its 100-year-old
plot in New Orleans and dropped by crane through the roof of the theater; a
carnival barker is singing through a megaphone accompanied by a pump-organ,
a fiddle and a hobo-clown on drums; several young women in party dresses are
dancing on the bar to New Orleans-style carnival/country rock n roll; you
just bought that beer you are drinking from a half-human, half-mechanical
fortune-teller wholl also sell you a bottle of devil-brew or a single
shot of firewater for less than a small popcorn at the moviesand comment
on your future for free; and, oh. . . youre also playing a game of bingo
for an unspecified mystery prize. If you can close your eyes and imagine
all that, you may be able to conjure up some sense of what it will be like
to be deep in the world of BINGO!, a music and gaming adventure which opens
September 12 at Combustive Arts in Brooklyn.
Clint Magnet and the BINGO! band hail from New Orleans where they have been
performing a sold-out show for the last five years at Fiorellas, a former
brothel/gambling hall in the French Quarter. Accompanied by violinist Brynn
Savage, bassist Steve Calandra, drummer Ryan Farris and an ensemble
including the beautiful Heather Soltis, Ronnie Numbers, Stix the Clown and
Mack, Magnets music has been described by Off-Beat magazine as
avant-garde living-room rock n roll.
The BINGO! band will spend the month of September in residency with the
combustive motor corporation, a Brooklyn-based artist collective,
collaborating on the first New York installment of BINGO! Known for their
multi-disciplinary performance pieces, avant-garde music presentations and
through-the-roof art parties, the CMC promises to add ammunition to an
already explosive musical and theatrical experience.
