This exhibition presents works that evoke reveries, dreams, or other workings of the subconscious by eleven Illinois artists from the MCA Collection. Gabellone examines the duplicity between representation and objects by laboriously constructing sculptures only to destroy them soon after he takes a photograph. In addition to photographs, this exhibition will include a large resin sculpture.
Wanderings of the Mind's Eye: Photographs by Illinois Artists from the MCA Collection
September 14, 2002 - January 5, 2003
This exhibition presents
works that evoke reveries,
dreams, or other workings of
the subconscious by eleven
artists who were at one time
based in Illinois. From artists
such as Ken Josephson and
Ruth Thorne-Thomsen, who
search the world for images
that speak of dreamlike
states, poetic situations, or
images that refer to legend
or myth, to Jeanne Dunning
and Mary Ahrendt, who
control or manipulate images to create startling results,
each work in Wanderings of the Mind’s Eye transports the
viewer from the everyday world. This exhibition is organized
by Curator Lynne Warren.
Giuseppe Gabellone
September 7, 2002 - January 5, 2003
Gabellone examines the
duplicity between
representation and objects
by laboriously constructing
sculptures only to destroy
them soon after he takes a
photograph. His photographs
become ghostly images of
sculptures that no longer
physically exist, questioning
the documentary function of
photographs and the
permanence of sculptures. In
addition to photographs, this exhibition will include a large
resin sculpture, further complicating the artist’s ideas about
presence and absence. This will be the first exhibition in the
United States of Gabellone’s work.
This exhibition is generously supported by the Exhibition Committee
Fund.
Additional support is provided by Instituto Italiano Di Cultura.
