St. Moritz Art Masters 2010: Countdown

In less than one month the Engadin will become once again the meeting point for the international art scene. The first signs of this unique art and cultural festival (August 27 – September 5, 2010) are already in place announcing the event. In the pedestrian zone and on the old schoolhouse place of St Moritz the 2 impressive sculptors from AES+F can be already be found.

Alain de Lille was a mystic and a commentator on the Apocalypse. This is our version of the Apocalypse. We present an apocalyptic parade, which does not constitute the end of the old world. It‘s the beginning of a new one. The Angels and Demons are infants. They are all new born and, like embryos, all have tails – long or short, sometimes just pushing through their nappies. All have wings, also of varying sizes. The clear difference between angels and demons, which is common to all cultures, does not exist here. Evil may look like good and vice versa. They resemble twins – every angel has an identical brother. Or sister. We can‘t tell which gender as they‘re at the age when human infants have a strong outward resemblance to each other and are impossible to tell apart. They have the faces of peoples who never settled in Europe but towards whom Europe strived. Welcome to the new age.

At the lake of St. Moritz, the sculptor from Stephan Balkenhol has already been placed with a marvellous view to the town of St. Moritz:

And Gallery Mai 36, Zürich
Stephan Balkenhol (*1957 Fitzlar / Germany) creates sculptures, reliefs, drawings and screen prints. His chunky, chopped and colorfully painted wooden sculptures are his artistic trademark. He presents humans, animals and architecture, sometimes in surreal combinations. The human being takes the centre stage in his oeuvre. He develops standard archetypes which he varies. His figures do not show any clear emotions and seem to look into the void. Wood (mainly cottonwood) is Balkenhol’s preferred and most important working medium. The materiality of the wood, as well as the structures of the working process stay visible underneath the paint layer. “My sculptures do not tell any stories. They hide a mystery. It is not my duty to unveil it; it is the viewer that has to discover it.”
