La galleria Riccardo Crespi presenta la personale dell’artista israeliano Gal Weinstein, Beside, Each, Other.

L’esposizione si svilupperà in un percorso unitario composto di opere per lo più appositamente realizzate: installazioni di carattere scultoreo e di dimensione ambientale, opere bidimensionali e video. Soggetto della mostra è il carattere complesso e ambivalente di ogni manifestazione sociale, ma anche l’ubiquità dei nostri atteggiamenti e della nostra stessa identità.

Al piano inferiore della galleria campeggerà una grande scultura il cui soggetto sono alcuni pneumatici che bruciano generando un denso fumo nero. Le fanno da contrappunto alcune rappresentazioni di grandi impronte digitali. L’immagine dei pneumatici in fiamme evoca situazioni di caos e di tensione collettiva, la rabbia sociale e le reazioni fuori controllo legate all’impulso di manifestare “contro”; le impronte rimandano invece inequivocabilmente all’unicità di ogni essere umano.

Al piano superiore, nella sala centrale, un tavolo da calcio balilla sviluppato in lunghezza dice l’uniformità all’interno di un sistema che, reggendosi sul potere di aggregazione e di trascinamento, tende ad omologare; ma le sagome dei giocatori, realizzate in fragile porcellana, esprimono la vulnerabilità del sistema stesso. Intorno sarà installata una serie di autoritratti realizzati con la fibra d’acciaio. Nell’altra stanza un video in cui la luna attraversa le sue fasi e alcune opere bidimensionali che rappresentano l’incendio di un bosco: lavori che parlano della trasformazione e della ciclicità di ogni cosa.

Così, tra istanze individuali e collettive, tra l’ordine e il caos, il controllo e l’esplosione, tra la rivolta e l’accondiscendenza emerge l’immagine dell’ uomo alle prese con desideri soggettivi, con un senso di responsabilità nei confronti del contesto, con la difficoltà di mantenere una posizione autonoma all’interno di un corpo sociale che tende alla conformità. Se la rivolta è impulso necessario, è speranza e nichilismo al contempo, la coesione è solidarietà, ma cela in sé anche la tentazione di un comodo allineamento e il pericolo dell’omologazione.

Questo il senso delle opere che Gal Weinstein realizza con perizia, anche se con materiali eterogenei e spesso di poco conto, dal legno alla porcellana, dalla cera al polistirolo, alla fibra d’acciaio. L’incongruenza tra il rigore del progetto e della realizzazione, tra la rilevanza dei temi e delle immagini prescelte e la semplicità dei materiali fa scattare, nella sua opera, cortocircuiti di significato e interrogazioni riguardanti le relazioni che possono intercorrere tra interpretazione ed esperienza, tra espressione ed opinione.

Riccardo Crespi gallery presents a solo exhibition by the Israeli artist Gal Weinstein, Beside, Each, Other.

The exhibition will be given a coherent and unified layout made up of works that have for the most part been created specifically for the occasion: installations of a sculptural character and on an environmental scale, two-dimensional works and videos. The subject of the exhibition is the complex and ambivalent nature of any public demonstration, as well as the ubiquity of our attitudes and even our sense of identity.

The lower floor of the gallery will be dominated by a large sculpture consisting of a number of burning tires that produce dense black smoke. Several large representations of fingerprints act as a counterpoint. The image of the tyres in flames evokes situations of chaos and communal tension, the social anger and runaway reactions linked to the impulse to demonstrate ‘against’ something; the fingerprints, on the other hand, are an unequivocal allusion to the uniqueness of every human being.

In the central room on the upper floor, a long foosball table speaks of uniformity within a system that, based on the power of aggregation and involvement, tends to homogenize; but the shapes of the players, made out of fragile porcelain, express the vulnerability of the system itself. Around it will be installed a series of self-portraits made out of steel fibre. In the other room, a video in which the moon goes through its phases and several two-dimensional works that represent a forest fire: works that speak of change and of the cyclical nature of all things.

Thus, between individual and collective aspirations, between order and chaos, control and explosion, between revolt and acquiescence, emerges the image of the human being at grips with subjective desires, with a sense of responsibility towards the surroundings, with the difficulty of maintaining an independent position within a social organism that tends to conformity. If revolt is a necessary impulse, is hope and nihilism at one and the same time, cohesion is solidarity, but lurking within it too is the temptation of an expedient alignment and the danger of standardization. This is the meaning of the works that Gal Weinstein realizes with great skill, although using heterogeneous materials that are often of little value, from wood to porcelain, from wax to polystyrene and steel fibre...

The lack of consistency between the rigor of the design and the realization, between the significance of the themes and the images selected and the simplicity of the materials, creates short-circuits of meaning in his work and raises questions about the relations that can exist between interpretation and experience, between expression and opinion.
