Liverpool is the only city in the UK to host a Biennial of contemporary visual art. In partnership with city venues, Liverpool Biennial 2002 brings together artists from around the world in a ten-week celebration of the freshest and most innovative elements of visual culture.

Liverpool Biennial continues to raise the profile of contemporary visual art in the city, building on a recognised tradition of ambitious national and international exhibitions. This is the second Liverpool Biennial and is being shown three years after the first. By delaying until 2002, the Biennial will now be able to take advantage of some of the newly improved spaces in the city including the prestigious Walker Art Gallery.

Delivered in association with flagship visual arts organisations Tate Liverpool, the Walker Art Gallery, Bluecoat Arts Centre and FACT, the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, as well as smaller city centre galleries and alternative spaces, the 2002 programme consists of five strands;

International 2002 is a platform for internationally established artists, created specifically for the Biennial. The artistic direction of the International is on this occasion provided by a team of curators drawn from Tate Liverpool, FACT and Bluecoat Art Centre and led by Lewis Biggs, Director of the Liverpool Biennial. Henry Moore Foundation Contemporary Projects is also involved as the commissioning body for a number of the artworks.

Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2002 is the annual exhibition of work selected from the UK?s art colleges, offering an essential platform for emerging artists. Selectors are film-maker Patrick Keiller and artists Sarah Lucas and Graham Gussin.

John Moores 22 exhibition of contemporary painting is the UK's biggest and longest-running national open painting competition. Hosted by the Walker Art Gallery since 1957, the competition celebrates the vitality of contemporary British painting. The exhibition in 2002 offers a first prize of £25,000 and is open to artists living and working in the UK. Judges this year are broadcaster/ artist Matthew Collings and artists Fiona Rae and Jenny Saville. Independent 2002 is the region?s artists exhibit their own work, and present the art of their choice from the UK and abroad.

Events programme includes Live Art performances, conferences, workshops, tours, community events, launches and parties.

Lewis Biggs, Director of the Liverpool Biennial said;
"The year 2002 has seen an explosion in the volume and diversity of cultural activity on offer in Liverpool, with Liverpool Biennial 2002 at the epicentre. Thanks to continued support from A Foundation, Arts Council of England, Granada Foundation, Liverpool City Council and North West Arts Board, the programme is the biggest and most exciting to date for the Biennial and the city of Liverpool. Liverpool Biennial 2002 is set to be the jewel in the crown of Liverpool's bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2008."
