Limits of Perception

The Joan Miró Foundation will be presenting "Limits of perception", an exhibition selected by Teresa Blanch containing 60 works by 16 artists from Europe and the United States who work in photography, sculpture, painting and video-installation and propose a critical look at our habits of perception. In an era marked by a surfeit of visual culture that tends to express itself through images that provoke and shock and in which a virtual concept of reality predominates, the artist is apt to retreat from any interpretation of this reality.

The 16 artists in this show are some of the more radical exponents of an artistic manifestation in recent decades that questions the role of art, adopting postures that strike at the frontal act of contemplation.

Their works present segments of reality by reducing its subjective content and emptying it of any precise meaning. They offer open narratives so that the viewer will look at them and, by reconstructing his own relationship with reality, will give them a meaning by involving himself in the creation of the piece. For these artists, art acts as an two-way exchange between the work and the viewer, and they use the fascination inherent in the images merely to introduce multiple questions.

The exhibition is thus an invitation to reflect on the experience of contemplation, through the deviations and ruptures brought about by certain works of art whose authors consciously operate on the delicate frontier between visual images, reality and cultural patterns to which we are inevitably subjected as spectators and as individuals.
