Ten Sculptures.
EXHIBITION # 56
Jennifer Bacon and Filippo Fossati are pleased to announce the opening September 20, 2002 of the first solo exhibition of work by American artist Jay Batlle called Ten Sculptures.
Using recognizable architectural forms such as the gasoline station and the fire escape, Jay Batlle's sculpture subverts obvious, recognized structures. By manipulating their scale and changing the material from which they are constructed, Jay Batlle distorts the use and the meaning of institutional icons and in so doing he changes their language and therefor our perception of them. By using light-weight wooden strips/lath/struts to construct his sculptures, unconsciously he also subverts the modern purpose of these industrially fabricated, functional materials. The interplay of rigid and pliable forms and the addition of color-stained surfaces further undermine the nature of these ubiquitous and romantic forms.
Jay Batlle has lived in New York City since 2000. Following his graduation from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1998 he received the Ateliers 63 Fellowship and spent one and a half years in Amsterdam. Since arriving in New York, Mr. Batlle's work has been included in several group shows including "Boomerang" at Exit Art and "Now is the Time" at the Dorsky Gallery, both curated by Ken Freed. Esso Gallery is pleased to open its fall season with the work of this promising young sculptor.
