Young Masters Revisited

The Cynthia Corbett Gallery is delighted to present Young Masters Revisited – the concluding show of the Young Masters Tour 2010 which has, over the last year, toured an excerpt of The Young Masters Art Prize 2009 internationally.

Young Masters Revisited features emerging and newly established artists whose work is inspired by Old Masters. Through painting, photography, sculpture, and installation, each artist engages closely with elements of the established art historical canon, either through technique, subject matter, or medium. However, their practice is undeniably contemporary – chopping up, reworking, and constantly re-evaluating the relevance of their artistic tradition within the plurality of today's cultural environment.

The Young Masters Art Prize is an initiative conceived by Cynthia Corbett, Director of The Cynthia Corbett Gallery. The Young Masters exhibition 2009 was curated by Beth Colocci and Constance Slaughter and was the official launch for the inaugural Young Masters Art Prize sponsored by AXA UK, which will run biannually. In 2009 The Young Masters Art Prize was awarded to co-winners Hector de Gregorio and artist duo, Ghost of a Dream, who were selected by an independent judging panel including artist Tom Hunter, and Lock Anderson Kresler, Head of Sales, Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art department.

Cynthia Corbett, Director: 'Young Masters Revisited aims to develop the momentum of the Young Masters Art Prize. We believe that what we have tried to achieve in this exhibition is a celebration of skill and technique, rather than a criticism of other art forms or approaches.'

Matthew Reeves, Curator : 'Young Masters brings together a diverse group of contemporary artists whose work is permeated by our cultural and artistic traditions. Their practice is varied – from porcelain to photography, sculpture to painting – but all of the artists in this exhibition explore concepts and imagery that create a dialogue with the past.
Together with the exciting and varied group of artists exhibiting this year, a big part of the success of this exhibition is its collaboration with different art historical contexts. Each of the three locations used for Young Masters Revisited help to challenge our perspectives and set up dialogues between the artwork, the site and the particular historical focus that as curators we have tried to facilitate, whether it be the sparse white cube of the Old Truman Brewery, or directly paring the Young Masters with their Old Master counterparts at both Sphinx Fine Art and the Courtauld Institute. '

In October/November 2010, Young Masters Revisited, curated by Matthew Reeves, will open over three venues:

Part 1 will open at Sphinx Fine Art, Old Master Dealer, Kensington W8.
Various artists including Leigh Chorlton, David Roche, Chris Antemann (courtesy of the Ferrin Gallery, USA) and Charlotte Bracegirdle will respond directly to the collection held by Sphinx, or draw on, parody, and contextualize the concepts of collecting and connoisseurship.

Exhibition runs: 6 October – 19 November 2010

Part 2 will open at The Old Truman Brewery, London E1 as part of PHOTOMONTH 2010.
This space will explore the relationship between object and environment through contemporary and historical display. Artists including Ghost of a Dream and Lluís Barba will hang alongside new additions to the Young Masters Tour, including Katsutoshi Yuasa (courtesy of TAG Fine Art) and Claire Partington (courtesy of Sesame Gallery).

Part 3 will open at The Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House, WC2.
This exhibition coincides with the 2010-2011 exhibition Exhibitionism: The Art of Display (visit www.eastwingnine.co.uk), where an excerpt of Young Masters 2009 presented by The Cynthia Corbett Gallery is currently on display. Lluís Barba will display works relating to the history of academic painting and the space of the salon. Hosted by East Wing IX 'Pop Up' space
