Sculpture, Light, Sound. For his show ''Topologies'', the French artist and curator will create new TV sculptures - moving image transponders. In these new works, TV images as independent entities, will travel within other TV images along with the viewers.

comunicato stampa

“A moving picture is a real thing and as a real thing it is not imitation. It does not reflect on life, it embodies the life of the mind.” - Ernie Gehr

“TVs emit light out, onto the onlooker and into the room. TVs have become our companion, like an imaginary friend that accompanies us in our daily lives.

Images leave a retinal impression, no matter how quickly or carelessly we glance at them. Images crafted for distribution (i.e. adverts, news, documentary, art) follow certain representational codes. These codes allow us to determine the nature of an image almost instantly. Shape, layout, and composition (topology) of a newly perceived image are matched for pattern against a huge catalogue of dormant memories of mental images, ads, dreams, movies, TV shows and sensations stored in our brains.” -Antoine Catala

For his show Topologies, Antoine Catala will create new TV sculptures – moving image transponders. In these new works, TV images as independent entities, will travel within other TV images along with the viewers.

Antoine Catala is a French artist and curator whose work has been shown in Berlin, Bordeaux, Chicago, LA, London, Mexico City, Munich, New York and Toulouse; in museums such as Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (Paris), Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh) and PICA (Portland). He has curated exhibitions at Taxter and Spengemann (New York) and Galerie Christine Mayer (Munich). Topologies will be Catala’s second show in New York City. Catala will be part of Margaret Lee’s 179 Canal show at White Columns, opening October 29th (his first NY show was with 179 last year).
