Ludwig Foundation Prize for Innovation in the Performing Arts (Aachen) 2002 goes to Black Blanc Beur
The first Ludwig Foundation "Innovation Prize" (Peter and Irene Ludwig
Foundation) was awarded in 1995. The prize (Euro 10.000,- as of this year)
is presented annually to renowned artists or artistic groups who have shown
continued or exceptional innovation in areas such as dance/theatre,
multimedia performance, music, video or "live art" (a committee of experts
is invited to make the selection).
This year, the prize goes to the French dance company Black Blanc Beur. This
company, under the direction of Christine Coudon and Jean Djemad, is largely
responsible for the fact that Hip-Hop and Break Dance are no longer
relegated solely to the 'street' - this phenomenon can now be seen in
theaters and festivals of dance and dance theater everywhere. Black Blanc
Beur have been on the cutting edge of innovation since their just legendary
performance in a parking lot in St. Quentin-en-Yvelines with 40 dancers (!)
in 1984. They were the first to invite choreographers of other persuasions
to choreograph dances for them and to multicultural mixes and open up
Hip-Hop to other influences. Their very original, highly-developed style has
thrilled dance audiences around the world. With Blac Blanc Beur, the threads
of many cultural tapestries, styles, rhythms and polyrhythms come together
to form a whole. That they have bridged the gap between high and low culture
and decidedly influenced a new generation of dancers and artists is
incontestable.
On October 3, 2002, at 8 p.m., the company will receive the award from Prof.
Irene Ludwig in the Ludwig Forum for International Art. Just back from an
Asian tour, they will show two pieces, "Défilles" and "Break Quintett"
(european premieres).
Supported by: Deutsch-Französisches Kulturinstitutes Aachen, Mercure Accor
Hotels, SAINT-GOBAIN and the German radio station WDR 3.
