Iglesia Universal. artlab comprises artists Charlotte Cullinan and Jeanine Richards who draw together elements of cinema, sculpture, painting and video to provide a supportive environment in which the artists and their collaborators can show work. For inIVA's soft season, Cullinan + Richards are constructing outdoor cinemas in two sites in the Shoreditch area.
Charlotte Cullinan and Jeanine Richards: artlab
IGLESIA UNIVERSAL
Charlotte Cullinan + Jeanine Richards work together as artlab, a collaborative
partnership that creates support strategies for visual artists. Merging the
functions of curator, practitioner and institution, Cullinan + Richards bring
artists, audiences and artwork together in a blend of lo-fi pragmatism that is
as challenging as it is prolific.
Cullinan + Richards prioritise collaboration and dialogue, seeing themselves as
an 'outpost' within the art world. These strategies mean that within artlab,
they can provide a platform for showing artists within their own constructions.
Cullinan + Richards' typical means of exhibition is a flexible, makeshift
environment that combines elements of cinema, sculpture, painting and artists'
video.
For inIVA's Soft season, Cullinan + Richards construct two outdoor cinema events
in the Shoreditch area, around inIVA's east London base. The screenings include
a programme of artists' videos, plus a 'pre-feature' spot including three
artist-made commercials for local businesses. The artists Simon Pendleton, Jo
Soughan, Derek Ogbourne, and Georgie Hopton are working on specific ads for The
One Pound Shop, Ron's Café, a local Grocer, and a dental practice.
Cullinan + Richards have invited the four-person collective Cambalache (Adriana
Garcia, Alonso Gil, Frederico Guzman and Carolina Caycedo) to develop a project
alongside the artlab open-air cinema events. Cambalache have asked people on the
Boundary Estate, the location for the first cinema event, to bring their
favourite music to be played during the afternoon before the film show.
Cambalache hope to produce a CD from the event to be sold in aid of the Boundary
Estate playground which will be rebuilt next year. (See overleaf for full
details of the open-air cinema events.)
In October, Cullinan + Richards convert TheSpace@inIVA into their temporary AL
free state HQ to present an archive of past works, other artists' works, and
some of their collections.
artlab is part of inIVA's soft season September - December 2002
Soft is inIVA's new season of visual arts projects, bringing together a diverse
selection of international artist-curated exhibitions and events. Soft is an
exploration of networking, exchange, mobility and interaction, and the season
presents these activities as viable strategies for contemporary art production.
Crucially, Soft aims to expose the elastic and fluid nature of current visual
art practice.
